He's alive and well in Hendersonville, TN, and working all the time... same way it's been for 30 years...

I just picked up Gene Watson's latest CD. It is a great CD, a lot of recording of his old songs and a couple new ones also.

Sonny Garrish is the steel player on the CD and he sounds GREAT!

In another thread, it was pointed out that Sonny does a lot of gospel or Christian country sessions, what ever you wish to call the genre.
On a weekend radio show, I heard Mike Manuel sing "Welcome to the Lost & Found", along with the distinctive Garrish sound.
Here's another from http://www.mikemanuel.com/
I believe that's Sonny in the studio.

In 1991 there was a minister friend that called me wanting me to meet some guys to play a concert in DeRidder,Louisiana. I really was not interested but I drove to Fort Worth,Texas and met them. It turns out to be Mike Manuel and his brothers Greg and Mark. That started the Manuel Family Band and I was blessed to play steel for them for nearly two years. Today, Mike Manuel is the only brother singing. The Manuels always use Sonny Garrish on their projects and there is some great steel playing. Sonny has a unique sound that separates him from others. I asked Kevim McManess, the sound engineer on their projects, what effects does Sonny use. His reply was "Paul, it is just him." For years Sonny has played on countless Gospel records as well as country records. One that comes to my mind is by the Kendalls which is "Heavens Just A Sin Away". Now I would love to see Sonny play at a steel show. My understanding from Mike Manuel is that Sonny Garrish is a super gentleman and a joy to be around. Sounds like a class individual to me.

Dale thanks for posting Sonny Garrish's copedent. It's interesting that he has 4 changes on the left knee and only one on the right.I think I would find that very difficult to deal with.I love Sonny's playing, and am amazed that he has been so prolific for so long.
I'm moving to Middle Tennessee in about 6 weeks or so and would like to know where I can go to hear Sonny (or anyone else for that matter)play Christian Country. Is it still played in churches around Tennessee or is it mostly Christian rock now?

Sonny was one of my earliest influences on steel guitar. I was raised on Country Gospel music and was always fascinated with the recording process. There was a great bunch of musicians recording on all those old gospel projects in the '70's and '80's, Sonny, Gregg Galbraith, Bobby All, Gary Prim etc.

I ran across an old album in my collection a while back of Bill Anderson's Po' Boys, that was done when both Gregg, and Sonny were in the band. Man those guys could pick even though they both looked about 16 years old. And, they've done nothing but get better.

Every good thing that's been said about Sonny is true! He played on one of our albums that we did for Skylite-Sing. He and my son, Jerry Hanley, played together at Cornerstone for quite a while. In fact, Jerry was a charter member of that church. Sonny Garrish has a very unique way of expressing the feeling of a song...never too much, always just enough. On the album that he did for us I had the privilege of playing right beside him on a couple of songs. A lot of our steel players are No. 1 and he's one of them!

Alan,
Sonny said that he added the first string raise (F# to G#) whole tone, awhile back, but everything else remains the same. He has it on RKR.
