I wonder what "Cowboy" Eddie Long thought of Hank playin' steel. There was an episode of Austin City Limits where Hank played lapsteel while singin' "Your Cheatin' Heart".

Ole, Hank Jr. is a pretty good all around musician. Brett, Cowboy has never told me but I know him and Hank Jr. are good friends. Every once in a while he will do a show with Hank Jr.

I think I remember seein' that clip on CMT a few years ago. Hank is definitely a great musician. I wonder who taught him to play steel. What's really awesome about that clip is first he goes to drums and then goes to the steel. You can tell that "Cowboy" Eddie Long is amazed when Hank plays a few licks of "Steel Guitar Rag" on Eddie's Sierra. For some reason at Hank's shows now, he doesn't play the steel-he plays guitar, fiddle, harmonica, and piano. I wish Hank would've stayed at the steel a little longer. "Cowboy" is a buddy of mine and he's a great steel player.

I saw JR at the Carlton Celebrity room in the early 80's and he played lap steel by himself pickin' the blues and signing old SR tunes. I had "hand beaded" him a native american design guitar strap with Hank on one end and Bocephus on the other & had a native american friend sew it to the strap.
I eventually tossed it up on stage as I couldn't get his attention (even being in the front row seats we were seated in) and the stage crew scooped it up. Not sure if they ever gave it to him or not. It was quite nice!
Oh ya, he's steel playin was alright |

Yes Dan, I am sure. the picture proves it I guess, besides that, Tom Baker of Sierra steelguitars confimed the serial number and sold me some parts to fix it because Eddie sure "uses" his guitars to the max.
Right now, with a new Truetone pickup, it is again a sweet sounding, great playing, universal S12 guitar.

Bas,
Congrats on the Sierra. As you can see, Cowboy plays the steel extremely hard!!!!!
His new steel, was specially designed for his lead foot. Have fun,

Brett. The Sierra was build in 1980 and I bought it in 2006. Steve Honest from London also played it a couple of years, as a road musician. So I guess Eddie played it around twenty years. All together this guitar lasted at least 25 years of tough roadwork!
I took it apart, cleaned the changer, took the "play" out of the rods. Renewed a few nylon parts and a few of the keyless tuning bolds that were bent. And that was it. These Sierra's are build to last. |

He was sure born to boogie. As he said once, having been taught piano by Jerry Lee and Fats Domino, banjo by Earl Scruggs, lead guitar by Scotty Moore and Chet Atkins, being born the son of the greatest county star ever, and having Miss Audrey pushing him, he had a lot to live up to. |
