I am always looking for an amp with a really great clean channel and I ran across this solid state amp from the 90's that is selling used for $75 to $150. 65 watts going through a 12" speaker so you should be able to keep up with a loud and obnoxious drummer. Laughing

The clean channel sounds great with all of the steels I have plugged into it, both lap and pedal. 100% analog- not one digital byte under the hood! With a very manageable weight of 28 pounds I call it my "Steel King Junior". Whoa!

A lot of lap steel players have recommended the small cube-type amps with digital effects from Roland (along with the Vox equivalents). Not a lot of clean headroom in those amps. If someone needs more power they can run a line out signal into the Main Amp input jack on the front panel of the Princeton 112 Plus. I've been running my Vox ToneLab ST into the Main Amp input when I want more than just a great clean sound (with a decent reverb). One caveat: when going through the Main Amp input you have full power from the amp (no volume control) so you would want to be able to control the signal level from your small amp or FX processor.

The Fender Princeton 112 Plus was replaced by the Princeton 65 amp in 2001, which is basically the same amp but with a few new features and a nicer front panel and knobs. Those amps are selling used for $150 to $200, not bad, but not a killer deal like the older model. And there is a newer model- the Princeton 65 DSP- which has digital effects so it is not 100% analog. (I prefer to have my digital effects in a floor pedal so that I can upgrade them when they become obsolete.)

Let me know how it works for you. Of course it isn't going to be anywhere as good as a steel guitar amp with a 15" speaker and the headroom of 200+ watts, but I think it sounds better than the Hot Rod Devilles and other new amps that you find at Guitar Center.

I was thinking more of a nice clean amp for lap steel that you can keep in the trunk of your car for jams and sitting in with friends. I do have a Fessy Six Shooter pedal steel but I play it more like a lap steel on steroids... Whoa!

Thanks!

Steve

P.S. I edited the subject line to say "lap steel" instead of "steel guitar".
