I just wanted to say thank you to all of the lap steel members who have contributed to the forum. I have attempted to play lap steel for about six years, buying and selling instruments thinking a new, better lap steel would make me better. The real issue was I wanted to play guitar but could not make the chord shapes without hand cramps and frustrations. I thought lap steel would at least allow me to play music, but something was missing. About 2 years ago I bought a cheap SX armpit guitar, tuned it to Am11 and played it using one finger to play the chords. Thanks to all who posted and commented about this tuning (low to high: ACEGBD). Most all chords can be played with one finger, add a thumb over the neck and you have your diminished chords. The seven chords of a scale are located within 3 frets, played with one finger. I call it the autoharp style of playing, but I am playing out and am having fun.
Again, thank you as you have made playing guitar a reality for me. And yes, I will keep learning the lap steel, too! |

Dave,
Glad to hear that you have found your "magic" tuning and wish you well in your continuing quest. This forum is indeed a great learning, sharing, and overall great place to be a member of the family.
