I have never had this problem before, until today. My Mullen Steel(with a Wallace Tru Tone) has developed a rather annoying fuzz sound.I just got a brand new Peterson Strobo Flip tuner this morning, hooked it up.Pluged that into my Steelers Choice seat, sat down, tuned it up(sweet).....turned the tuner off,and bamn, there it was.I nasty fuzz sound.I turned the tuner back on,and it seemed to help clean the sound up some what.I use George L cables(checked them)still fuzz.Went strait to the amp(by passed the Goodrich volume)still a nasty fuzz.I then tried the guitar through my Fender Twin, still sounds fuzzy.Do pick Ups go bad like this??It worked fine until hooking it up to the tuner........go fiqure!! HELP!!!

Kevin,

Have you tried bypassing the Strobo-Flip?
Distortion is a common problem with them. If that proves to be the trouble spot, you can send it to Sue at Peterson, and she'll do the diode mod required. You can then just leave it on if you like.

Good luck!
Cheers!

Thanks Benton and Chris,

I am still getting the problem with just a cable from the guitar to the amp....is it possible,it messed up my pick up some how??I know it seems a rather strange question....But why would it only start to distort after plugging it in to the tuner......now it is doing it all the time, strait into the amp(just a cable)and I have tried several.....everything worked A-1 prior to that... Sad Crying or Very sad

Kevin, Have you found the problem yet?

I had a strange buzzing sound once and it turned out to be metal filings between the string and the magnets on the PUP. Also, make sure your pickup isn't too close to the string. The magnet will try to suck the string towards it and that may create a buzz. No closer than 1 quarter's thickness.

It might not have anything to do with your new tuner.

Some of the old MSA's had built in Fuzz Tone. Could it have screwed up somehow? Or could you have accidentally hit the switch?

Would it be worth your while to bypass this if you have it?

Only suggestions...process of elimination...
Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up Bent, but this is my Mullen I have the problem with.I think I might be getting somewhere with it,I have been tinkering. One thing I have found, that after I changed the battery,in the goodrich....some of my problem was the wires touching the medal inside(coming from the pot)This seemed to create a lot of noise.
Second I turned everything way down, that was running into my mixer(thought maybe to much gain)turned my amp down a bit.It seems to be better. But this still doesn't solve the problem of why I was having fuzz with just a line from the guitar, strait to my amp(both of them)anyways, the tuner does have a lot of distortion, when shut off,so best to leave that on while playing,as far as anything else to try, well I'm gonna go flush my ears out.....seems like that might work......lol.

When you say it distorts even when you plug the guitar straight into the amp, do you actually mean from the guitar jack to the amp jack, no volume pedal between?
The reason I ask is that you say later you are having sounds appear in your volume pedal and wondering if it is bad.

Make sure you don't have your VP in the loop and try it and see if the distortion is still there. That will isolate where the problem is. If you use 2 different amps and the distortion is present in both, that tells me the problem is in the guitar (assuming of course that you tried a different cable also).

Also, I can't leave my Stroboflip plugged in as it distorts my signal a bit, and mine was supposedly made after Petersen made the diode mod. And this is with a Hilton pedal and plugged into the 2nd output on the pedal.

Plug your Tele straight into the amp and get a nice clean sound. Then unplug the guitar and switch to the steel. It should have a nice clean sound too. If it doesnt, then the steel has a problem. If it does sound clean, then its the extra cord, the pedal or the tuner that is creating the noise. One thing at a time.

Had the same problem with my Carter & Rains. Leave the tuner on. I had to replace my cords. They seemed good , but changing them fixed it.

Thanks everyone for the heads up,seems that this morning, everything has settled down....hard to say what happened there.I know what I heard.Maybe my ears were clogged up,from excessive volume?? hahaha.Anyways I don't do drugs,so that wasn't the case Very Happy .I'm gonna keep a close ear on it......but the tuner is an issue, thats for sure.Beauty of a tuner, and is dead accurate, don't know how I went so long without it.Thanks again for replies everyone Smile

You might want to check out this thread about isolating that jack you're plugging into.

Amps start to distort when the mains power voltage drops to a low level.
Maybe the voltage was low yesterday?

Very interesting John,I was gonna ask the same question more or less, seems as I did even try to come form my Goodrich Vol pedal to the tuner and back again to it(lost a lot of signal)I'd like to ask,if I am doing it right, after playing on and off stage for a good many years as a lead guitar player, common practice was to go from my guitar to my tuner, from the tuner to my Volume, then to my amp...this is what I have been doing all along...Am I right(is this the cleanest tone possible??

Bob,
Here is the unique thing, after checking and double checking and triple checking(it does lead to this after awhile)The issue was still presenting it self ever so slightly,so here is how I have it broken down.

Upon switching my George L cables back an forth, end for end(cables all have strait ends)I have come to the conclusion...there is one cable that is running hotter then the other(both 10 ft)seems to be warmer, ever so slightly. This could be the issue I'm thing.Given the fact that When hooking up the tuner,I grabed the extra cable in my Pac seat.

Now for the other thing(this is long winded I know)With everything that was going on,sound wise,I think my attack got slightly more aggressive....which means....I more then likey turned to my amp,and turned up the pre volume.....which in turn boosted the signal going in.....causing it to drop somewhat in volume. That made me turn up the master, which in turn, caused my hearing to go......lol.

So in a nut shell....glad I wasn't on stage for that one,and lesson learned, don't panic, things are usually solved. And thanks to all the good folks here in the forum, help is always very handy.

Thanks a lot guys!!

Kevin Very Happy

I leave my Peterson on at all times when I am playing. If it is turned off there is a noticable fuzz in the sound. I also use the power supply rather than a battery.
