I had the pleasure of accompanying Uncle Roddy last evening at Hulaville in his trademark "Kaleohano" , "E Kila Kila" and several other songs. He told me that he was producing a show on 27 August in southern California featuring Cyril Pahinui and Greg Sardinha, neither of whom require any introduction in this forum. Details in the link below. See you there!

Steel guitarists and enthusiasts: don't miss out on supporting this event, welcoming Greg Sardinha and Cyril Pahinui, and promoting the growth of steel guitar in Orange County/Southern California. In addition to this event, there are now steel guitar kanikapilas, concerts, workshops.... see other threads on this Forum section for details of these...
See you there!

The Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach CA was the stage for an exceptional concert yesterday, billed the "Instruments of the Islands". While Cyril Pahinui on slack key and Greg Sardinha on steel were the main event, also featured were artistes such as Aunty Geri and her group Mehana, and Uncle Roddy himself with his group O'ahu". Then followed a blaze of colour and syncopated rhythms accompanying the Le Polynesia Dancers, several notable hula performances, and other artistes that made it a wide spectrum show. Opening the show was a colourful ensemble of a hundred amateur ukulelists from the Southern California/ Orange County area: a lovely touch. Music is for all, and not only for the professional big names. The three hour concert extended to nearly four (with two intermissions), but I do not think any of the 400 or so in the audience, who paid $35 to $40 each, would have had reason to complain about that.
From a steel guitarist's point of view, it was nice to witness a rare event: the steel guitar taking centre stage, at least for part of the show. And no one better than Greg Sardinha as its ambassador. Greg played with Uncle Roddy's group O'ahu, then on his own set, and then finally with Cyril Pahinui. Steel guitar took centre stage in his set, lovely dulcet tones flowing from his steel, and very well accompanied by his bass and rhythm guitarists. Although all three on stage played through DI boxes that went through a stage mixer, and not through individual amplifiers, the mixing was skilfully done so that all instruments were heard distinctly with their individual timbres and presence, and yet resulted in a real nice, tight sound.
Southern California is home to over 20,000 native Hawaiians, and roots would have originated from the days when Los Angeles would have been the closest port of call to Honolulu and therefore first home to those that wished to come to the mainland.
Yesterday's concert reminded all of that heritage. Kudos to Uncle Roddy for a great production!

Yes, Greg is a great musician, and not afraid to try out newer and contemporary tunes on steel.
Just met and played accompaniment steel with Uncle Roddy at today's kanikapila at San Clemente...his voice as good as ever. We need more shows of the kind he produced in August (Greg Sardinha/Cyril Pahinui).
