My only comment, "surely Gibson is not the only one".

In reality, according to the sworn affidavit of Fish and Wildlife Service agent Kevin Seiler, the wood was unfinished – a violation of the Lacey Act. ... β€œIt is clear that Gibson understands the purpose of the Lacey Act, and understands that … fingerboard blanks are not finished fingerboards and thus Gibson is aware that its order for fingerboard blanks was an order for contraband ebony wood or ebony wood which is illegal to possess," Seiler wrote.

IMHO, this business of insisting that the fingerboards be "finished" is a crock, and has absolutely nothing to do with endangered woods. What difference does whether or not it's finished matter to the depletion of the wood?

I have always understood the intent of this law was to protect endangered species. I'm sure we'll hear more legalistic diatribes about the letter of this law, but none of this convinces me, and I doubt it will convince most people.

Yeah, it is indeed hard to picture that Gibson is the only guitar manufacturer importing unfinished Indian rosewood, which has been the mainstay of the rosewood for guitar building since 1970.

All my opinions, naturally.

This month's Guitar Player Magazine has an editorial about the Gibson situation.

EDIT:A (very) populous nation on the other side of the planet finds it legal to export finished counterfeit Gibson guitars to the United States.Does this mean that that nation's laws take precedence over US trademark protection statutes?

I read somewhere that Fender and Martin received shipments at the same time as Gibson, and from the same shipping lot number. Don't know if that's true or not though. Seems kinda unlikely.

They don't seem to care about the stockpile of drugs and people that were imported illegally.
Anyway let's talk about Steel Guitar.
After they've done away with capitalism who will build Guitars?

can you prove your wood is legal? Did you import it illegally or did you purchase it from someone else who imported it illegally? If I take your guitar out of the USA will they let me bring it back in?

I can't prove any of that Bo! There was one guy who got screwed out of a whole shipment of antique pianos because of the Lacey Act. He lost the pianos, and had to pay a hefty fine.

It's really hard to discuss this topic without turning to politics. As much as it makes my blood boil, I'd like to suggest that people take their rants about Gibson vs. the Feds to Facebook or some other pol-friendly venue.

American musicians are largely on the same side of this issue, so any opinions posted here would either be "preaching to the choir" or "get a rope" - flame bait in either case. Let's try to restrict this topic to news information only, okay?

This is a photo of Country Singer Tom Bovine's dog
"Longpaw Bovine" (whose fur resembles the color of Tom's hair). Longpaw can howl in Tom's key.
