I turned on the TV to catch the weather and it was on the local PBS channel. About that time I hear Lawrence Welk announce Charlie Pride & Lloyd Green. They did 2 numbers..Just Between You And Me & Lovesick Blues. Lloyd was playing his "Lighting Bolt" fingertip Sho~Bud. No electronic "JUNK" between the volume pedal and the amp. Just "PURE" Sho~Bud !! Awesome !! Coop

James; the "Lighting Bolt" Sho-bud Fingertip that folks refer to; is the Fingertip that Lloyd played with Charlie Pride and Johnny Paycheck and many many others back in the mid-60's and the finish on the front apron had a inflection in it that looked like a "lighting bolt" shown below.

I want this Fingertip more than LIFE itself...Mainly because I wanted to get it to set it up to play the way Lloyd remembered it playing; and have him record with it again...>but I can't find the guy or he won't reply to me, to do that...oh well; I'm sure it looks good sittin' in the corner of his room> just sittin' there

That's the same guitar pictured on Lloyd's "Mr. Nashville Sound" album. If he actually used that guitar on the album, it is one of the most awesome guitars I have ever heard.

Hey Guys, Interesting topic....Let me see if I can figure out how to insert a few pictures of this great show. I have a copy of the entire show, on DVD. I just had to first make a call or two to see if the involved parties mind if I post some pix....

Interesting story, as i was told, Lloyd was scheduled to do the Welk show back in the spring of 1967, and later flew to Hollywood to tape the show with Charley Pride, but due to scheduling conflicts later in the summer, Lloyd was never able to see the show on the evening of it's originally scheduled airing. Actually, I was told that Lloyd had NEVER seen the airing of the show at all.

I believe it was my "long lost brother" Red Kilby that had heard about the show, probably through Lloyd himself, and the great performances by both of these legends, so Red did some "pulling of strings" with NBC Television, a couple years ago, and somehow ended up making a contact with Mr. Welk's secretary from back in the day, and through their archives, and several months of searching down the particular show, they found the copy in the vaults, and eventually Red's patience was rewarded, and his plan was to present a DVD format of the entire show to both Lloyd and Charley. Red told me it was his "special" Birthday present to his "other Dad" Lloyd that year.....and to say he was surprised, and pleased, was an understatement, I would imagine.

When Red and I last spent some time together, last Christmas, he filled up my suitcase with cool DVDs and CDs, and right there on top, as an early birthday present to me last year, was the last copy he had of the NBC/Welk DVD with Lloyd and Charley. Definitely one of my most prized items in my collection....and to see Lloyd playing that famous "Lightning Bolt" Sunburst Sho Bud....whew....great sound too, cranked up through my Home Theatre system.... Though by far, the "icing on the cake" so to speak of my trip to Pueblo, was to spend New Years Eve with Red and Linda, sippin "Colorado Kool Aid" while soaking in their hot tub, smokin' a good Cohiba, and talking for nearly two hours on the phone with one of my personal heroes, Mr. Lloyd Green. One of the most gracious, personable gentlemen I have ever had the privilege of speaking to. And to add to it, a couple weeks later when i returned to Detroit, I recieved a package in the mail from Mr. Green himself. He had sent a couple of his latest CDs and an old 45 single he had released back in the late fifties, all autographed. Believe THAT??? What a GUY !!

Anyways, lemme see if I can figure out how to insert a few digital pix of the show I took..... I'll get back with ya..

Jay Ganz???...do your thing you do man??ha.
Oh and one birthday wish I wanted to give Lloyd....but I never could get ahold of the guy here in Texas that has that "Lightening bolt" Fingertip of Lloyd's....>was to talk him into letting me have the steel and set it up the way Lloyd remembered how it felt playing wise(I know exactly the way Lloyd likes it to play) and have Lloyd Green record with it again....but no luck.

Glad you enjoyed the pix, Ricky.. In regards to sharing a video clip or two of this awesome show, First, I would have to clear it with Red, (i already interrupted him and his OTHER other Dad, Chrysler Designer Carl Cameron, at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale this afternoon) and he would then have to clear it with Lloyd, prolly.... and then the absolute worst part.... I would have to figure out how to do it.... Remember, it took me hours to figure out how to just post those pix..... Not that fluent in the tech stuff in computer-ese....

You ought to hear these two cuts from the show cranked up, through a good Home theatre system.... WHEW....(also, thanks go out to "Mr. Marantz", circa 1975 ) I can get the pictures to shakin' on the walls of the den when I take a notion.

Definitely a true musical treasure in every sense of the word!!

Hi Egil,

Sorry about the e mail mixup. I should get around one day to contacting Brother Bobby Lee about changing my e mail address settings here on the SGF. I only changed it 4 years ago

I also have been wanting to join the procrastinators club too, but keep putting it off....

I sent you an e mail earlier, but in case it didn't go through, my e mail address here at the ranch is commander31@wowway.com

Have a great day....

Scott

Reviving an old thread...
The Lightning Bolt has meant so much to my steel guitar "upbringing" that when I bought lumber for "Blue" I knew I had to have the board that makes up the apron. Check the pics here: http://benrom.com/gallery.php

I went out and bought some more curly maple today for my next project...lo and behold I found another lightning bolt board. Guess what? Another BenRom Lightning Bolt will be born!
I guesstimate a gestation period of about 3 months...
