Hi
I recently bought a project G Deluxe with a bad output jack. It would not accept the jack plug as though something was blocking it. When taking it apart I found a hard black material like Bakelite that had melted and was encapsulating the bottom of the pickup, the pots, wiring, capacitor and I suspect the output jack although I have not got that far yet.
Has anyone experienced this and is there a way to get it apart without destroying the cap, pots and wiring? I would like to salvage as many original parts as possible but I don't see a way to remove the glob without damaging the components.

| Bakelite is thermo-setting not thermo-plastic. It can be burnt but it will not blob as a melted plactic will.It could be the black wax from the pickup windings or? When you touch it with a metal point does it chip or feel soft? |

This material is not Bakelite but it resembles it in appearance. It is black and very brittle but it softens up when heat is applied for a few seconds. There was a large amount of the material. After picking at it for a few hours I was able to remove the pots and jack but I am not sure how serviceable they are. This is apparently someones idea to fill the cavity for some reason.

A lot of those early model 59 and Silver Hawaiians had a pitch like material coating inside to stop resonances others just had newspaper stuffed in and some had both.

| I've come across that black pitch inside a few Silver Hawaiians before. I think it's some sort of creosote. I removed it by repeated rinsing with hot water and steam. |
