I was watching HDNET last night as they were featuring a Crosby Nash concert (recorded in Conn. in May of 2011). Dean Parks was playing guitar and pedal steel. I'm sure the show was edited way down from the live version itself and Dean only played steel on "Teach Your Children" but...it was refreshing to hear it played in tune (and with great respect to the original style)
Of course, he played some of the most remarkable and tasteful and cool stuff on guitar. If you're not familier with Dean's credits, go to www.deanparks.com . It's a sort-of never ending list of artists and songs we've all heard since the late 60's (he must've been 13-years old when he started). I'm sure many of you have seen him play steel live and hopefully I'll get the chance myself. Very inspiring musician!

Ah yes! Dean is another one of the "Musician's Musician" breed. I remember meeting him when he was just getting back into the steel guitar. He played non pedal as a kid in Texas, but then got sidetracked into sax and then of course...Guitar! I got to play bass with him a few times after he re-discovered the PSG, and each time he had grown exponentially, but even when he was just getting back into it, he already had chops and great new ideas. He's a monster on any instrument he plays!
I always get a kick out of "Dean sightings" on TV. The last time, I saw him in the orchestra playing guitar in Italy accompanying Andrea Bocelli, the great blind opera singer!
Then I see him a couple weeks later at Jim Palenscar's shop, nailing a Mooney lick on steel!!!
Way to go Dean! |

Dean is a musical genius, and more importantly to me, as fine a person as he is a musician. I'm honored to consider him a friend and to have had the pleasure of his sharing music with me. |

I am also proud to call Dean a friend. We first met in Dallas back in 2007 and have kept in touch ever since. I had the chance to see Dean with Crosby and Nash last May in Niagara. Fabulous show. We spoke after the show and he introduced me to Graham, who with Crosby has a huge amount of respect for Dean's talent. This was obvious both during and after the show.
Dean has also done some studio sessions for friends of mine here in Canada that I have facilitated. Needless to say, the parts were impeccably played. Dean is one of the greats. Just a glance at his album credits would scare the daylights out of you. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars
