cpu fan wiring ques

I ordered a fan for my friends Dell Dimension 8400. His fan has 4 pins, 2 black, 2 yellow. The ordered fan is also 4 pin, black, red, blue, and white. The plug looks the same and his pc is listed as compatible. It should plug in and be ok?

Many Dell's and the 8400 is included use a proprietary Dell CPU cooling fan. If a non-Dell is used a "Fan Failure" notice will appear whenever it's booted and the user must press F1 to continue the boot.

I can't say about the wiring on the non-Dell fan, because of the Dell proprietary on their fans.

Dell fans also incorporate additional electronics on the fan that non Dell fans do not have. Thus the reason the system detects the "fan failure" with a non-Dell fan.
