The album says pedal steel but it sure sounds like lap steel to me. Can anyone say for sure and if is was lap steel do you know the tuning(s) he used.
I just noticed Jerry Byrd's name is also listed as lap steel guitar. Does anyone know which tunes were played by which player?

Mike, I thought Bud played all those tunes and if he did, he would be playing his D8 Bigsby, A6 and E9th (non chromatic).
I haven't heard it in a while, but its definitely him.
Around that same time Chet did cut a lot of instrumentals with JB.
They were called the Country All stars and also feature Homer and Jethro.
There is a CD of it on Bear Family called "Jazz from the hills " a must for any Byrdophile.

Lee, a few tracks like Corina, Corina really sounded like pedals. Did his D8 Bigsby have pedals?
I only heard one basic sound and player style so I kind of doubt Jerry was on that record but it sounded non-pedal most of the time.
Thanks for the help. I'm making a CD with Guy Van Duser and he wants it to have the basic feel and flavor of that old Chet record so I want to be as accurate as I can. |

This is the guitar in question:
Notice the plunger keyhead; first pedal would raise B->C# and G# ->A, second pedal D->E, B->C# and G#->A. Both pedals down the tuning becomes A6. |

Mike, I use that old E9 tuning for non-pedal guitar. It is one of my 2 main tunings. Buddy Emmons and Speedy West also used it, but they also had pedals.

The tracks that Jerry played bass on recorded on the 17th of September 1953 were Peeping Tom, Three O’clock in the morning, Georgia camp meeting & City slicker which I don’t think are on the “Session” album so I guess I got it wrong last time. I thought it had been issued on a “Two on One” RCA/BMG CD but I’m not certain. It could have been a UK or European release.

I haven't listened to it for a long time but it seems like on "Caravan" you can really hear Bud's pedal work.........JH in Va.

| Bass player on Session With CA-album is Bob Moore, Jerry is not on it, neither are Homer and Jethro, although some sources claim so. The rhythm guitar player was Ray Edenton. |
