First- I'm Holly, a daughter of Russ and Laney...Big thanks to my mom for letting me post from her account!
With all the excitement building up for St. Louis this weekend, I've been taking some time this summer to listen to just about all the records my Dad has ever played...that I could get a hold of, at least. Listening and loving every lick and finding an even greater appreciation for all the wonderful music and genius artistry that filled my childhood home ~~ also the music that came before my time ~~ and the great projects he's done since I 'left the nest'. All this enjoyment and reflection got me wondering what others love to hear. I certainly have my favorites, but I see no better place to ask this question than this amazing steel guitar community. The real lovers of this beautiful, complicated, addictive instrument.
So take a moment, please, to post your top 3 songs you love to hear Russ play. That's right, your limited to 3! I can't wait to get your feedback and I hope to see many of you this weekend!
Blessings,
Holly (Hicks) Singleton |

It's tough to be limited to three. Your dad plays all songs with an abundance of creativity and personal style. I have to lean toward one album, "Chicken Pickin' Good". Three songs? hmmm! The blend of Jimmy and Russ was unmatched. This is an overdue and well deserved weekend for Russ.
By the way, I have the LP, but would like to buy it on CD if it gets remastered at some point.
See and hear ya'll this weekend! _________________ 1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Revelation preamp, Carbon Copy Delay and Hall Of Fame Reverb, Crown XLS 1002, 2- 15" Eminence Wheelhouse speakers, ShoBud Pedal, Effects Pedals. 1949 Epiphone D-8. |

Holiday for strings
Soft Rain
Walk Don't Run (I think that's right)
I know it's more than 3, but I'd like to add his vocal performance of "I Ain't Gettin No Touchin'" from the Barefoot Jerry "Keys To The Country" album. Heck, I like anything Russ plays. |

Tom T. Hall's "I'd Rather Die Young" plus everything that Russ did with Jimmy Crawford. This is amazing stuff. I always thought the records were doctored because it is impossible to play so precise until I heard them do the same stuff live on stage.
Thanks for the music, Russ, and congratulations to the HOF induction which is so well-deserved.

Hey Joey and all you steel nuts...LA, you are a 'Wonder'...I'm amazed
that all you guys even know about some of the songs you've mentioned. Joey, I'm afraid I'd have to think about what my favorites would be; let me wait 'til after Scottys and let this topic get down to the bottom; then I'll post my favs to sneak it back up to the top.
Speaking of Scottys, I was gonna go western with my clothes but after all that's happened in the last few weeks I'm not able to find a cowboy hat in a size large enough for my head.
On a different note I want to say how sorry I am about Wimpys' and Bobbes' not being able to make it for their 'moment'....I know they're as excited about it as I am and I hope that Scotty can find another way for their inductions to be a ceremonial event. If anyone can he can.
See ya'll soon, Russ |

Russ, Scotty could put them on Skype and use a video projector for all to see and hear. That way they can "attend" anyway, if they agree to do so. |

Hey Holly,
First, let me just say how much I'm looking forward to seeing all the Hicks gals again. It's been way too long.
Folks, you are all in for a treat. All the girls sing great, and when you put them all together, well, it's something special.
As for narrowing Russ' work down to a favorite three, that's tough. Everytime I think of three, I think of eight or ten more. I have to say that I really enjoy his version of "There she goes", Wayfaring stranger" and "Shall we gather at the river". I could name a bunch more, but you get the idea.
Anyway, see ya there,
Jim

Tough to narrow it down to three cuts. I really liked Russ' early stuff on the Kitty Wells recordings and later the stuff with Gilley. "Chicken' Pickin' Good" with Jimmie is an all time favorite as well as Russ' cut, "Please Come to Boston" on the "Nashville Bar Association" album. His newer music is awesome as well. Plus... he likes goin fishin... that makes him a swell guy in my book.
A super player with his own great sound and style. A good guy too. Congratulations Russ !!! You absolutely deserve this.
Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" Olson |

I have more than three favorites by Russ, but here are three that came to mind first:
I Love You A Thousand Ways - from the Hicks Picks CD
Wayfarin' Stranger = from his Gospel CD
Walk Don't Run - not sure which CD that ones on...
and sneakin' a fourth one in: Ghost In This House - from the Runaway CD.
I have most, but not all of Russ' CDs; something I plan to correct in time. |
