I gave away my large lathe as I remodeled my barn into a man cave. I would like to get a small hobby type lathe to make parts for my steels or fiddle around with.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I can recommend the folks at MicroMark. They are a small, privately-owned business here in New Jersey and I have visited their warehouse. They are also big in the model railroad business. Check out their catalog.

Len,
You can have my big, old tool room lathe if you want to come down and pick it up.

If you can find one, a Unimat 3 with tooling is very useful. I used one to rebuild the undercarriage of an old Marlen pull-release and it was perfect for making small, fiddly parts. Mine has the vertical millng and drilling attachment which is extremely useful although you need to take things very easy when milling.

I also used it to make parts for a fellow radio amateur for his "moonbounce" transverter. He now holds a world record for two-way communications using the moon as a passive reflector. Here's a couple of pictures of the "machine shop":-

and here's the drilling attachment being used to drill brass rod-clamps. The workpiece is 1/4" brass rod in the machine-vice.:-

Thanks for the replys and info. I will get a small bench model for projects. I am trying to downsize and still have the tools to enjoy.

Thanks,

Lenny

http://www.mini-lathe.com/ has lots of info!!! Covers most of the small metal lathe types you'll run into as well as worthy modifications, adjustments, and upgrades (photos as well). Unimats are nice very small lathes. Craigslist is a good place to look for these things. My man cave IS the machine shop;-)

Just out of interest.

This is a small Chinese lathe I bought about 5 or 6 years ago for home use.

http://www.warco.co.uk/metal-lathes-metalworking-lathe-machine/15-wm-180-variable-speed-lathe.html

It was cheaper when I bought it, but even now you get a lot for your money with all the included extras. After 40 odd years in the trade, I can recommend it as great value.

Also got the WM16 Mill which is very good.

Don't know if this equipment is available in the States.

I bought a 9 X 19" lathe from http://wholesaletoolcompany.com/ ,several years ago. I see they are selling for $995.00 now. I also bought a milling machine from them.

They sell smaller ones & carry these in various sizes to meet your need.

The nearest one to you I believe is North Carolina. They have 5 locations and can ship them anywhere. I went directly to their large store/warehouse in Indianapolis when I lived in that area.

These were made in China. Mine are calibrateted very accurately and both do a very nice job.

Would I rather have American made ?? -- Yes !

This company carries both American made and Chinese made tooling & machinery. I have found the Chinese tooling they carry, to be very good quality as well. There is a big price difference between American made & Chinese made though.

These are choices we all hate to make in the world we live in these days.

Best of luck on whatever you end up with.

Harbor Freight has a small one for about $500, don't know how the quality is but it looks pretty good, may be worth looking into if there is a store nearby. Some magazines have a HF add with a 20% off coupon.
