Hello folks

It's been almost 2 years since I got my Carter Starter PSG, and I think it is time to move on.. (not a minute too soon,,)
I never had the chance to try out any other steels cause I live in Israel and it's quite rare to even see one of this machines in this part of the world.
My budget would be around 1200$ before shipping, knowing sending it to Israel will not be cheep at all.
I am looking for a S10 3 pedals and at least 4 knee levers.
What do you think I should get? as for models etc.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks. Rani

Hello Rani and welcome here.1200 bucks will not get you the guitar you need. All modern steel guitar makers are very good.Since I own 2 Msa's and a Shobud I can tell you they are great instruments. If you are going to play one of these the rest of your life, go on and get one that will do just that.My top choice would be Msa or Mullin. But thats just me.There are some great guitars out there. My advice is, go on and get you a good guitar and be done with it .You will only be as good as the intrument allows you to be.You might be surprised if you call some of the people that build these instruments how helpfull they will be.

Thanks CrowBear, you might have a point here, I would love to have 5 levers..
Did you have any experience shipping a PSG to France? when I got the carter two years ago it only cost me around 150$ but I was very lucky it came good, the steel came in too separate packages not even boxed..

i've had many psgs, steels & other gear sent over from the USA
via postal (USPS)is by far the cheapest as long as the weight of the item does not exceed the requirements of the country it's sent too
otherwise Fedex, DHL, Bax Global will do but they're more costly & take you to the cleaners when it comes to the customs fees & extras they lay on you

3 to 4 pedals & 5 levers are pretty standard nowadays
of course, 4 levers will offer you plenty of combinations
personally i prefer having as many options as possible
on E9 i have 3 & 5 (which is fine by me)
C6 is another matter & should have more options than E9

I think the best deal in used steels would be vintage MSAs from the 70s. They made a gazillion of them, so they are not rare, expensive, collectors items, and they are great instruments, solid as a rock.

I had 2 that I played for over 25 years and they served me well all that time.

There are several listed in the For Sale section.

One thing: They are heavy. You'll be shocked at how much more they weigh than your Carter Starter. But you'll also be blown away at how much better it is.

There's still a Magnum SD-10 available for very near your budget right now - http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=210242

You can definitely find a solid used pedal steel in the $1000-1500 range. I would not cheap out for a few hundred bucks - be patient and get one that will really do it for you. Of course, it's tough not being able to play one yourself.

We discuss this periodically - there are many good quality used steels in this price range: older MSAs (as Mike says), BMI, Dekley come to mind. But even newer and strictly-professional guitars like Carter and Magnum (made by Carter) come up. To my tastes, those are the 'best' deals I see - a really fine modern guitar that plays and sounds great for very reasonable money.

I have to admit I'm partial to MSA, but Dekleys are also great guitars. (I have no experience with BMI guitars and can't say anything about them, other than to mention that other people seem to like them.)

Something you have to think about is whether you want to continue with a single 10 string, a double neck, or a 12 string. Do you want to play Western Swing and/or other style styles of music for which you'd need a C6 neck? Do you want to stick with E9, but expand the range of your guitar to include some bass strings?

Everybody will recommend what they themselves use. Since I used an MSA single 12, (I still use an MSA single 12) that's what I recommend.

At one time, parts for these guitars were hard to find. Today that is no longer a problem, as Michael Yahl is making them. I don't know if he is making parts for Dekleys.

There are some for sale on the forum. Any one of these would suffice for your needs, and all are within your price range.

Rani, I have a like new GFI Ultra SD-10 3x4, Case and Legbag that I would sell you if you interested. I have not listed it on the Forum yet but I will be asking $1600.00 + shipping. It weighs 37 lbs set up and 49 lbs in the case. It plays and sounds very good.

Thanks everybody for your comments and ideas.
I think I'm not quite ready for a 12 strings guitar yet nor to a double neck, though it's tempting, I still have lots of work in the standard s10 mode. A fifth lever I wouldn't mind, but the most important thing is to get something more professional then the Carter Starter.
If anybody have experience with shipping costs to Europe/middle east from America, I'll be happy to hear.
Mike, spacial thank for your efforts with the links.
Roger, I sent you a PM back.

A buddy of mine has a GFI Ultra just like the one above except keyless (same color). He paid significantly more (used) than Roger's asking price. I gig with it all the time (after being used to a Starter, myself) and I love it!

Edit:
Just remembered, my buddy's GFI has a 5th (vertical) lever (which I've never used).
