I don;t know the name of the album that contains those 2 songs, but another of Willie's albums that contains some absolutely fantastic steel playing attributed to "James Clayton Day," is called "The Troublemaker."

The troublemaker in question is Jesus, and all the songs are of a religious nature. It's a wonderful album. with both men, indeed everybody involved, at the top of their game. I think it's one of Willie's best records.

Not what you asked, but I also highly recommend "The Offenders Reunion: Can't Get the Hell Out Of Texas". Vocals by Willie and Johnny Bush--and one by Jimmy--and lots of primo Jimmy steel, including several instrumentals.

One of the most tear jerkin' steel breaks I've ever heard is Jimmy Day's steel break in Willie's tune "I Don't Feel Anything". Gives me the shivers every time I hear it.

Don't remember what disk it is on but I think it was recorded in the early 1970's.

Willie had so many compilations and reissues, it's hard to know which one you refer to Brendan, but here are 2 that I know of.

Neither of them have both Drunk and Detour on them together though.

The 1970 recording Both Sides Now has I Gotta Get Drunk.

The 1975 album titled What Can You Do To Me Now has Drunk, I'm a Memory, Once More With Feeling and several other ballads that feature Jimmy Day. I have that one and it's a great old collection of a dozen or so mellow Willie tunes enhanced by the soulful touch of James Clayton Day.

Take a look at www.allmusic.com for some clues too.

I have the "Willie Nelson Live" album, but it's not the one you're referring to--doesn't have "Detour". I remember I got the album to specifically learn Jimmy Day's great steel break on "I Gotta Get Drunk".

What Mike Perlowin said! I think you can get "The Troublemaker" on itunes if nowhere else. I just love what Jimmy did on that record.

Thanks to all who replied .
Looking back it may well have been a compilation tape I had listened to all those years ago .
In the meantime have listened to some great work by Jimmy Day .Never was much of a fan of Willie's singing but he does have something .
