From the opera "The Tales of Hoffman", the "Barcarolle" is its most famous number, composed by Jacques Offenbach. It has also been incorporated into many films, including "Life is Beautiful", an Italian film made in 1997 made famous by Roberto Benigni. He played the part of a Jewish Italian, Guido, who had to employ his imagination to help his wife and young son during their internment in a Nazi concentration camp. This tune is featured in the film when Guido finds a way to communicate with his wife, Dora, who is imprisoned in another part of the camp, by playing the gramophone over the camp loudspeakers.
A barcarolle from the Italian barcarola, is otherwise a folk song sung by the gondoliers of Venice and characterized by a rhythm reminiscent of the gondolier's stroke, in 6/8 time.
Played here on Steelocaster, A6, key of D.
