Touch and Tone is a frequent subject of discussion here on the SGF.........and that's as it should be.
You can hear one of the finest examples of that by visiting the JERRYBYRD-FANCLUB.com/ site and by going to JERRY's MUSIC page.
Clyde Moody sings "If You Only Knew" and JERRY BYRD
puts forth some of his finest with that early day Richenbacher and Volu-Tone amp. Small sized speaker with a bigger than life SOUND!
Give it a listen and see what you think. |

I am blessed to have Alan Akaka as a mentor/teacher/friend. He was Jerry's #1 student among the Hawaiian steelers, and, in addition to helping me sonud more "Hawaiian", has insisted on improving my touch and tone. It has made my pedal steel playing sound much better, as well. |

I second that Jack...but would add in some of the other students from the "Nest"as great examples of touch and tone....Casey Olsen, Greg Sardinha, Paul Kim and Doc Akuna. And not for nothing, but I will also put up Bobby Ingano as someone with "it"...although he was a Rogers haumana |

Agreed. Bobby told me that he had a few lessons from Jerry along the way, but not many - just to improve his tone. Imho, Bobby does it all. Another great guy. He played with me at HSGA in 2009. Much fun. - Jack |

Not saying he didn't say that, but I'd have been interested in personally hearing that statement, Jack, as I know factually that Bobby never sat with Jerry for a lick, and they didn't really even speak for decades until Bobby wanted to put things to rest between them and called Jerry asking for a meeting at the Halekulani one nite. I was invited and enjoyed seeing them patch up some differences after knowing the full story up to that point. |

That must have been it. Bobby was a handful in his early days, and Jerry was a handful always- your curmudgeon's curmudgeon. All Bobby said to me was that he'd picked up some pointers from Jerry. He also told me that it was Feet who got him in line - "you nothin' but a punk". It's hard to imagine the Bobby I know as being a hard case, but most of us grow out of it. |

Yes, Feet and Jerry were the biggest influences for Bobby tho the relationships had contentious moments, yet all his 'teachings' from them came verbally and off their recordings. Obviously he's a good listener, and it was listening to my relating Jerry's 'moment of truth' between Jerry vs his Mom vs the steel that helped push Bobby to patch things up. These are my 2 favorite steelers, so that was a special thing to see. |
