An evocative tune written by Walter Blaufuss, lyrics by Gus Kahn.

Recorded previously by Bing Crosby, Marty Robbins, Glenn Miller, Melveen Leed/Benny Kalama and others. Featured in the LP "Reminiscing" (Chet Atkins and Hank Snow). And then a memorable rendition by David Keli'i, which has to be my favourite.

I recorded this on C6 steel guitar a few years ago, and dusted it out from the shelves for a recent steel guitar performance at Hulaville. All tracks by me.

This has been my all time favorite Hawiian Song. I always played the first part on my A6th Tuning and on the last part moved up to my E13th Tuning. I kept all necks on for a smooth transistion neck to neck.
Your version was very good but I wish you had also played the lead on the second part. IMHO, vibes compiments the Steel Guitar but should not replace the melody of the most beautiful parts.

Beautiful tune and very well played. I first heard the Marty Robbins (with Jerry Byrd) version. Marty changed the phrasing however, and that version is stuck in my head. The original melody starts on beat 1 as you have done, Kay. But Marty started the melody on beat 3 of the lead in... which basically shifts the entire verse melody ahead 1 beat. That's how I learned it and it's hard for me to play it "the right way" now... Cool Funny how that happens sometimes.

You are right Doug, it's kinda hard to get used to playing it correctly. I'm kinda surprised that Jerry let it be played that way. Question

Doug, yes the Marty Robbins version is different. My fav amongst the ones I researched would have to be the David Keli'i version, closely followed by the Billy Vaughn version for the contrast between the steel and brass timbres.
