I listened to this song recently. I am questioning if there is a steel guitar in this song. I would like to learn this song, but I here a sound with qualities of a sustaining keyboard and a steel guitar in one.
So this is a question about electronics. Does anyone know if this is indeed a steel guitar but with electronics to sustain the notes in the form of what a Keyboard does.
The song is "I told my world to go away"

I think this is something that will benefit steel players in the future when they come across this particular sound. _________________ Keenan Friday

As good as John Hughey's Steel guitar sounded, it is a shame to put that much artificial effects on it and ( to me ) ruin it. |

Wow. We don`t give much slack to our heroes, do we ?
I mean, John cut probably over a hundred straight tracks with Conway...
Effects on one, come on.... _________________ Olli Haavisto

Sounds WRONG to me... That was not nice at all, completely ruins the experience. Sort of reminds of a very old Lloyd Green album that is impossible to listen to, because someone decided to use an electric harpsichord on every track. |

Gentlemen, John Hughey was not the steeler on this album. Conway had another steeler before John, he late great Lew Houston. He also played the first four albums Conway recorded, after his switch to country. I had the pleasure of seeing Lew live once, and he had all kinds of tricks, when he played. He also played on Conway's "Working Girl". Lloyd stated, it's quite possible, that was the birth of "chicken pickin'. He was really a good player. |

Keenan, not to get to far off topic, most likely is lots of Tremelo and/or Vibrato amp effects as previously stated.
Here another one,

And as also noted by Eddie Thomas above, it is Lew on these early Conway recordings.I've really dug Lew Houston's style since seeing him appear with Conway on The Porter Wagoner show on RFD. Very unique style. No volume pedal , volume and tone knobs on the steel. Also had pedals on the right side! Check it out,
