I have been trying for years to identify the name and artist for the following song. Here are the lyrics, and a link to an Mp3 file of the song. Nice steel playing by a great player, Stephen Silver.

Don’t Turn On The Lights
Lyrics & chords, as sung by Cowboy Larry. Recorded at the 3-Flames Restaurant / Bar in San Jose, CA in 2008 by Rich Koch. Author unknown.
1 – 5 – 1 INTRO CBL does it in (A)
1 4
When you come home tonight, don’t turn on the lights,
5 1
‘cause I don’t want you to see me cry,
1 4
You’ve been out running around, making all the spots in town,
5 1
So when you come home tonight, don’t turn on the lights,

4 1
You’d be better off if you didn’t see me cry,
4 1 5
And I don’t want to see that far-away look in your eye,
1 4
So just whisper goodnight, don’t turn on the lights,
5 1
‘cause I don’t want you to see me cry. (all right boys)

SPLIT LEAD

When you come home tonight, don’t turn on the lights,
‘cause I don’t want you, to see me cry,
You’ve been out running around, making all the spots in town,
So when you come home tonight, don’t turn on the lights,

You’d be better off if you didn’t see me cry,
And I don’t want to see that far-away look in your eye,
So just whisper goodnight, don’t turn on the lights,
‘cause I don’t want you to see me cry. (1 time boys)

SPLIT LEAD

You’d be better off if you didn’t see me cry,
And I don’t want to see that far-away look in your eye,
So just whisper goodnight, don’t turn on the lights,
‘cause I don’t want you to see me cry,

Tag: ‘ cause I don’t want you to see me cry.

Ain't that the truth. It's really a challenge to play with the ole Cowboy. I'm filling in Thursday for French and Larry is threatening to show up. Why me , Lord???

This song was written by John D. Loudermilk and recorded by Margie Bowes (Doyle Wilburns' wife) in 1960 on the Hickory label (#1124). No info on it being recorded by anybody else.

Thanks guys. We have been looking for this info for several years.

The guitar player is my playing partner, Steve Sandness. Great player. I get to play in a few different bands with him and it is a real pleasure.

Jerry, normally (and this night in particular) I generally slept through the night behind my steel. By the second set each night, both the singer and the bass player were drunk enough to piss me off, so I rarely made much of an effort with my playing. It is not the best performance of my vague career to be certain. But I never gave a thought that this would show up on the forum.
