Yes...This is the newly organized dobro rig. The 2 Fishman boxes are dobro specific. Upper left is the Pro-Platinum EQ/DI. Black box on right is the Jerry Douglas Aura pedal. The rest are nothing really outrageous. The setup allows me to "rock out" a bit, play at telecaster volumes and sound like a dobro. The Fishman stuff is bypassed for my steel gigs.
No..Not used for straight ahead bluegrass! _________________ Howard Parker

Howard, that looks like an excellent setup to use in conjunction with the Fishman Nashville pickup.
What is your main guitar these days that you use with this?
No doubt a Beard of some kind... _________________ Mark |

....I can't i.d. the Ibanez box, what does that do?
And who makes the tuner?
You need to add a looping station of some kind so you can get the Jerry Doulgas thing going. _________________ Mark |

Yeah..
I'm still using one of the two prototype "Vintage R's" that PB built back in 2001. Finished in Porsche automotive high gloss black.
I find it odd that every reso I own was bought long before I ever considered working in the biz. In the era of MAS, JDS and Odyssey I still happily cling to my "Black Beard"! To say the guitar has opened up in the last decade would be an understatement.

That's the "Tube Screamer" overdrive pedal. The tuner is the new Planet Waves (D'Addario) strobe tuner.
I don't think a looper in in my near term plans. I had to make choices based on my bands' requirements. None of them really require anything more than a nuanced approach to effects. My use of pedals is pretty subtle in support of whatever ensemble I currently play in.
The two Fishman boxes allow me to at least get on the same playing field as other electric instruments.
Cheers

Hi Howard,
That's an impressive box of stuff for a professional.
This amateur wants to get a ''dobro/reso'' sound from his electric solid body six stringer, so what device would you recommend?
I have looked at real resos, but I'm not sure I can afford one, so if I can impersonate one with my current axe + device + amp, I'll be happy.
Thanks,
John |

John,
I have absolutely no experience emulating dobro with other instruments. I just never had the need.
Dobro is my "first" instrument and I'm fortunate that these days there is a significant interest in dobro playing "non-traditional" genres. This "rig" allows me to take the dobro into new environments without sacrificing those acoustic properties that make the instrument so desirable.
Some of those other pedals allow me to (usually) subtly shape those acoustic properties so that the dobro sounds like it just "belongs" in whatever opportunities I pursue.
btw...I used this rig last weekend. I played through my Nashville 112 instead of an acoustic instrument amp. I was the only guy that DID NOT have feedback issues. I was darned impressed.
cheers

Hey Howard,
Curious, what makes this your non-bluegrass dobro rig? How is this different than your bluegrass dobro rig?
Inquiring minds want to know! |

Hi Rob,
I think it is just semantics. I'm not one to define what is/isn't bluegrass. That argument goes on forever on other forums .
The decision to play "bluegrass" plugged/unplugged really depends on the expectations of the venue and the audience. Sometimes they just need to see all of those mic's lined up.
In those cases I use a Shure SM-81 or Beta 57.
Dunno...Is my explanation plausible...at all??

makes sense now. I was just wondering why you listed this as your non bluegrass rig. |
