The accoustic contact pickup on my dobo quit in church during the last mass of the season, and I'm in need of a new one. Since I don't want to put any holes in the instrument, I'm interested in Lace dobro sensor. Have any of you used this pickup? If so, what did you think of it? I'd appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks

I used it, it sounds like an electric lap steel in my opinion. Even through a bobro

I haven't used one, but I have heard the same thing from others who have used it. How much money do you want to spend on your pickup? You might investigate the Gold Tone ABS clip on mic as an alternative.

I've got the single-coil squareck Lace Sensor Dobro pickup on my cheapo SX spider-bride reso.
Works very well live, very feedback resistant; the sound isn't 100% pure dobro, but I wouldn't say that it sounds like a lap steel, either - the tone is somewhere in-between those two instrument types.

I've got on on a dobro, actually put in a volume control pot and a jack also, cord goes in through the f-hole, looks great, easy to do. Didn't even have to remove the cone to do it.

They changed their installation instructions a while ago - used to say to install up at the end of the fretboard, now says to install closer to the cone, and this gives you more cone sound in the output (plus more treble).

It is just double sided tape, you can try out a few locations to get the sound you are looking for...

I purchased a Lace Sensor a few months ago and put it on my Johnson resonator. I think it sounds ok but it does color the sound somewhat in my opinion. I have a utube video if you would like to take a listen to how it sounds. Keep in mind I'm just a rookie player so listen to see what you think of the Lace pickup.

Hey, that sounds pretty good!

Any pickup will color the sound.....even playing into a mic. My Amistar dobro has a piezo pickup molded into the cone and a P90 on the body and a blend control....that is the best "real" sound I've ever heard (which is why I bought it). Most of the good acoustic pickups of any sort involve a piezo and a mic or mag pickup to blend with it...

Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate them. And Mel, thanks for the clip of your playing. I'm still leaning towards the Lace. I was wondering if I could plug it into a volume pedal first rather than going directly into the amp, or do I need a preamp?

As with any guitar, putting a standard passive volume pedal immediately after it will interact with the pickup and volume control and cut your highs when you turn own. Solution - put a buffered device first in line, volume after, or add a treble bleed capacitor to the pedal (pretty standard guitar/vol pedal mod)

...or use an ACTIVE volume pedal, that already has the buffer on-board (like those great George Dennis vol. pedlas - stay away from the active Morley ones, though...)

i plug mine straight to the volume pedal (maybe through my delay pedal first) and then to my steel amp on a steel guitar gig. ..actually just pull the cord out of the steel and stick it into the dobro.
works fine for a few tunes.....a workable compromise to the proper mic setup for real dobro tone.

plus..it was really cheap.
