I recently got lucky and found a Harmos Americana for sale.

According to the included docs it was originally supplied with: 036,030,024,020,017,014 and tuned to C6

As delivered it was strung with:
037w,042w,030w,022,016,014 and slack.
I've tuned it to gdbgdb for now and will grab some new strings the next time I'm in town

The notable difference is the 030>042 which strikes me as peculiar.

Does anyone know why someone might choose these gauges? It seems a strange choice and I'd be interested to know if it has some particular application.

Hey Michael,
I am not sure, but I think the strings that came with that guitar are for six string Hawaiian C13 tuning. That being hi to low,E C A G Bb C. The fith string is tuned lower than the sixth string so you need a heavier gage on the fifth string. C13 is a very popular Hawaiian tuning and this would be a way to get this tuning on a six string instrument.

Thanks for that! I use Andy Volk's great book "Slide Rules" as my tuning bible but it didn't have that one.

I'll give that a try before I do any restringing.
