A musician friend is going to Hawaii for a long weekend, lucky guy!
He will arrive Thursday, July 21 at mid-day and is leaving
Monday July 25 at 10:30.
One group he plans to see is Hulaville. Is there any other Hawaiian group
playing this weekend that he should be sure to see?

Gene,
I believe Hulaville is in Orange County California.
To give more helpful information about groups we will need to know what Island your friend ia going to?
If it is Oahu - Thursday evening go to the Waikiki Marriott at 5:30 PM. to hear Alan Akaka. On Friday go to the Waikiki Outrigger at 5:30 PM to hear Pahinui and Ah Hoy next to the Halekulani. On Saturday and Sunday go to the Halekulani at 5:00 PM.
Aloha,
Don |

Well, to start with some steel, I believe Derrick Mau plays Friday nights at Honeyʻs in Kaneohe. He is here on the board from time to time so he might be able to give more specifics. As far as Hulaville, he is probably talking about Hot Club of Hulaville which is a gypsy jazz group here that just won a Na Hoku. Pretty good group at that too...if you like gypsy jazz. |

But I believe Jeff Au Hoy w/Cyril Pahinui/Peter Moon is still Wed. eves. only at Kanikapila Grill. |
Ron, when I was there in May it was on Wednesdays and Fridays. Do you believe it changed after May?
Everyone should note that the Kanikapila Grille is in the he Outrigger Hotel by the Halekulani Hotel.
Sunday afternoon in Waikiki on Lewer with Alan Akaka's steel show showcases a number of excellent steel guitarists, it is a must see and hear.
Derrick is a good one, although he plays more backup to the singer than playing steel numbers. Honey's is hard to find on the Windward side unless you are familiar with the territory.
Aloha,
Don

This reads like a subliminal message!!
John would this be a kind of recommendation for persons on the Steel Guitar Forum to see Greg Sardinha
when he comes to the Chicago area for the 2011 Joliet HSGA annual convention in Ocober.

Hey Don:
Without doubt! Really a killer player-- I knew he was going to be good but wow- what a treat to see him live. I would definitely recommend seeing him in Joliet!
Gordon Freitas was on guitar duty last week and that was a nice bonus.
I spent today in the Hawai'i State Archives-- I found some really interesting material on July Paka's early tours (pre-Toots)--a wonderful photo and tour diaries from his manager to boot. I'm having a most excellent steel guitar adventure in Oahu!

The gent you folks so kindly gave info to, about music to hear in Hawaii, gave me this follow up so that I could share it with you.
Here's some info on the music during my Hawaiian jaunt.
Friday night I went to hear the Hot Club of Hulaville at Che Pasta where they play from 6 - 8:30 pm. Unfortunately their vocalist, Ginai, was not there that night, but the band was excellent nonetheless. I got to sit in on washboard for several tunes in both sets, and sang "I'll See You In My Dream" and "All of Me." Their tune list is very broad ranging, not limited to tunes Django recorded. Nice guys. I'm sure they'd go over well here, especially with Ginai.
On Sunday evening I went to one of the weekly installments of the 2nd annual Steel Guitar Festival. This is a series of outdoor converts in a green space on front of the Embassy Suites on the Waikiki Beach Walk. Greg Sardinha performed for an hour or more. I didn't get full names of all of the band but it was Gordon on guitar; Rick on bass; and Brickwood M. Galuteria (Hawaii District 12 State Senator) on guitar. Though everyone on stage professed that they were not a "regular band" they were right on, including some neat stop time on Kohala March. (a real old-timer in the steel guitar repertoire) As Rick said, "Yeah, we've not been his regular band for 20 years." Some tunes were originals by Gordon, but most were traditional or steel guitar standards, such as Kohala March and Sweet Leilani. It was a lovely and lively show.
Thanks for all the help,
Rich Markow |
