Ok, folks, how'd ya like to play a little game? I'll send a free one of my CDs to the person who wins the following contest:
How many words, of 4 letters or more, can you make out of the following:
PEDALSTEEL
Proper names are not permissable and the final judge of what "is" or "is not" a "word" lies strictly with MOI (i.e., me). But I'll have you know that I have an Oxford English Dictionary (both volumes) AND I even know where the magnifying glass is! If I can find it in the OED, it's ok. If I can't, well, you're outta here! Deal?
OK, all entries must be submitted via email to me at jim@jimcohen.com no later than midnight (eastern time) on August 31st.
Oh... one more thing... Donna, I'm gonna be watching you verrrry closely this time, so no funny stuff. (Hey, what're you laughin' at Randy? You'd better get Judy workin' on this one fast, cuz Colm is already halfway done with his list)
Enjoy!

Hey Jimbeaux,
Is English the only language permissible? Judy speaks more than one language.
Oh never mind. I just reread your post. Only from the (OED).[This message was edited by Randy Beavers on 18 August 2004 at 07:56 PM.] |

How about tenses and plurals? Will they be considered separate words?
Words with double meanings? |

Tenses and plurals are fine.
And a word can have as many meanings as you like, but I'm only gonna count it once wiseguy.
And yes, you can have any CD from my own personal collection that I'm ready to part with. Howzat for a deal?
Now quit pickin' nits and get to work!

I suspect there are so many words that by the time you get to the bottom of the word list, it could be difficult to account that some of the later words are repeats of some of the earlier words (that's an old trick I learned in school) It may help to submit the word list in alphabetical order to avoid slipping in a few repeaters. (Although some of the four letter words may be better off placed in a few choice spots).
Maybe you can give an say 10 points extra for alphabetical order? |

Truly, Jim, I won't hold it against you if you bail on this--I started messing with it and there are more than 7 words in there! Going through our entries would not be how I envisioned spending my summer vacation. Take my advice and say "nevermind". |

Jon,
It might work out that Jim does not have to do too much work and give up the rest of his summer, providing everyone provides a word tally. Then Jim checks the longest claimed tally first. If his validated number shows it is still longer than the other entrants tallys then he is done. If not, he then validates next longest Tallymon to see if it prevails. The behind guys don't get looked at, but Jim may peek at the behind gals. |

Excellent idea, Colm! YES! I accept this excellent idea.
OK, now you have to submit your list alphabetized and numbered!

I'm playing, too! Already up to 40 words. "Word" has it that Judy Beavers is up to 60-something. I don't think she should be allowed to play since she has all those brain cells that weren't destroyed in the 60s like most of us experienced. I have already decided, if I win, I'd prefer one of your Jim Cohen mousepads with your gorgeous bald head on it! |

OK, based on early submissions we'll NOT include plurals. No point in multiplying all your words by two when everybody else can easily do the same. Makes my job easier. So... NO MORE PLURALS!
Thanks kids!

Jim, based on your no plurals, I assume a word like pets, pals, etc. is no longer valid (even though there is no doubling effect here).
Correct?

Yes that is correct. You cannot get up to 4 letters by adding an "S" at the end of a three letter singular to make it plural.
Oh boy, what have I started here...? Crossword puzzles were much easier than this... |

Jim - What's the most received at this point? My list is so long, I had to put it in a 2-inch binder and use dividers! You DO accept dividers, don't you, Jim? |
