In these days of micro chips and all, I was toying with the idea of putting a steel tuner on the steel itself, much like you see on accoustic electrics. Perhaps with the face plate being placed on the player side of the steel neck with a switch to turn the tuner off and on.
Wish I was smarter in electronics! Very Happy
What do you guys think of the feasability?

Hey Bill, that's along the lines I was thinking about, except my tuner would not be a separate item. I would parallel the output of the pickups at the jack to input to the tuner unit so that even with the pedal backed full off, I would still have a signal to the tuner. The display would be set in the side of the neck.

Or............something like that.

Only trouble I can see is that some tuners mess with the signal when in the loop, very bad juju.

Years ago at Scotty's Show there was a Japanese player who had a built in tuner on his guitar. Don't remember his name or guitar brand. Jody.

I do like the idea of installing the tuner in the middle of the pad, though, with the right unit it might work very well. Alas, my little KORG is not the right unit...

Carco Clave has one on his push pull that's not much bigger than the pickup switch. I don't know what make it is though.

The Japanese player with the tuner in his steel was Mitsuo Fuji (correct spelling?) who manufactures the Excel Steel guitar. It was featured on one of his single neck models. It was built right into the top of the guitar near the rear and to the right if I remember correctly. I thought it was a pretty good idea at the time..........JH in Va.

The trouble is that the steel guitar will last about ten times longer than the tuner. Today's cheap electronic devices have very short service lives, in my experience. Not so cool having a dead tuner stuck in your steel, with no replacements available...

I'm certain that someday there will be a keyless PSG with a Gibson Robot Guitar style self-tuning system.

This is what I use to mount my Tuner on my Steel. I had a piece of metal mounted to Tommy Dods Steel leg mount for the Pod XT.. Its so easy to glance over any time to see where my guitar tunings stand..

Hi there Wally,
The tuner that I've used for many years is an Onboard Research Intellitouch which takes a couple of nickel sized DL2032 batteries.
The unit is just slightly wider than 1" by about 3" long.
It comes with a clip that can be used on any guitar or banjo if needed.
This has been just great for many many years and just rests between the neck and the pad. I honestly wouldn't use any unit that would mean altering the structure of the wood or the armrest material.

All Z.B.est.

Bob.

Great responses guys and Bob Manwaring, yeah, that is about the sixe I am interested in and I think you are speaking of the PT 20. I was not familiar with the Onboard Research products.
Jr., you have a good thing going there too!!
Thanks again.

I don't think it will work.
How about a braille tuner. Ain't no way a guy could read one of them tiny on-board tuners in a niteclub.
Better yet how about a Butt Braille Tuner mounted on a Pack-a-Seat for you older Guys Laughing
Seriously I think an on-board tuner would have to be where you could see it well at a glance and that would make it too big to be practical. Built into or in the loop of your FX or in the rack would be as good as any.

The Peterson Strobo Flip is a super fine digital strobe, that comes with a microphone stand mount, that fits the leg of my old Fender D8 non-pedal perfectly. It should also fit your pedal steels I believe. It's about the size of a "Big Mac hamburger. It is the first and only tuner to have tempered tunings for steel guitars.

I just keep it in line, flip the lid up and check my tuning anytime I have a few seconds to do so.

Love it.

I use the old Boss TU-12 and have for at least 20 years. I just velcro it on the back apron on the far right. If I'm using a volume pedal that has two outputs then one is for the tuner and if I use the old Emmons pedal with only one then I run it inline. It does change the tone only slightly but not enough to worry with. The thing I don't like about having all the attachments to the side of the guitar with the extended arms holding tuners or effects is that it takes away from the appearance of the intsrument.
That fine if you're playing at home but for me I don't want it to look like the cockpit of a 747.

Personally I have a Peterson Strobrack tuner in my rack right next to me ...it is well lit and the display is big enough so I can see it without having to lean over -- and my rack has a LED light on it anyway !
My guitar is heavy enough as it is without adding any more weight to it Very Happy
