Topic: Just did a steel track for a studio in New Zealand |

I had an inquiry about doing a steel track for a recording the studio was doing for a local 14 year old girl. The song is a Dylan song, "You Ain't Goin Nowhere" and he said they had got permission from Dylan to do the song.
It was a I IIm IV chord progression through the entire song.
I sent him a steel track, but haven't heard back yet. But there is enough on the track he can cut/paste or whatever he wants to do. I also did an intro/break/outro on the song.
I didn't charge him for this as he said he is doing it free for a school project. |

Hi Jack, Congrats on the new venture. I have done some sessions by transferring files over the internet & then adding my parts & returning them. It is a bit more challenging than just doing it with the producer/artist there - but the rewards are great & the travel is definitely easier!!! Especially when you live on an island like I do!!!

Jack ,this is good to hear and share, I too have been very involved with two fairly large independent projects over the past months , one from Mexico and the other from the UK, both are 10 or 12 track projects which are on going. I have also been doing E sessions for a small studio maybe 60 miles away from where I live.
A very interesting question they asked me though, they asked me to confirm that I was an authorized user of my recording DAW of which the answer is yes. At first I thought that was an odd question but now that I think of it , it makes proper sense for them as they are paying me, it protects the paperwork trail for them and for any future
question of legality which may appear. It's on ME.
By the way both projects are nice but the Mexico project is killer, those cats and the gal singing are incredible writers , players and vocalists.
My DAW is PT 8 and I use YouSendit for the transfers. YouSendIt is a free service for single files up to 100 MB.

Jack, I love the fact that we can do sessions over the internet now days. It enables us to play on projects that would not have been possible a few years back. I do work for people all over the place and don't have the pressure of a "producer" sitting over me and I can play the track when I want in the comfort of my own environment. I try to give several different versions of the tune so they can copy and past whatever they want.

Jack, I would totally agree, Loyd is "THE" world class player and hard to beat, but listening to a track like that before a session would be a HUGE mistake. Sessions call for originality to match the project in hand.
Playing Steel guitar or any instrument for that matter, with an influence from other players and Pro's, is one thing, we all do this, it's natural, but when it's time for us as individuals to add something from "within", then it's time to step up to the plate.

Here is a link to an MP3 of the song. It's not to be distributed only by the production company per their agreement with Bob Dylan. It is presented here only for "info only". They are working on getting it on iTunes when it is released, along with CD distribution.
When I did the track, I played through the entire song and let the engineer pick out the parts he wanted. That gave him a good amount of steel to pick from.

Hey Jack, I've heard quite a bit of your playing on different projects and a few years back you even sent me a CD that you had recorded in your home Fostex 16 track studio recorder and I've even heard some of your more recent projects that were recorded on your newer and more sophisticated studio equipment and while I have always enjoyed your playing on all of the cuts I mentioned this project was just fantastic I believe it's the best playing that I've ever heard you do!!! Way to go!! Keep up the good work and thanks for posting the song!!

Wow Jack that's excellent! A great idea to have kids sing Dylan!
Although this sounds like older kids, I think this CD would be great for my granddaughter to practice with - she's almost 7 and has discovered that she has a great singing voice. This is awesome!
It was great to see your name in the credits... Good work Jack.
