I recently had a conversation with Henry Bogdan, who is a really interesting person. One of the fascinating things about Henry is that he was a member of the alternative metal band Helmet that was very influential in the '90s, and then he did a complete 180 and became involved playing Tricone with a number of different groups, including the Moonlighters, which he was a founder of.

Henry plays music from his heart and he is very low-key with a quiet intensity. I thought it was interesting to talk with him and shared his experiences with Jerry Byrd with me. He also told me he is no longer pursuing the steel guitar, but has developed a passion for the tres, particularly the Puerto Rican tres.

Hi Mike,
I've been enjoying this interview, as well as the one with Lee. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

I look forward to the rest of the interview. Henry is actually the person responsible for me getting into 30's swing. A couple of years ago I went out to hear this Sol Hoopii inspired tricone player and fell under the spell of the rest of the band and the style Smile

Henry's playing this Sat at the Blue Monk in Portland with the Midnight Serenaders for all you local folks.

The conversation with Henry is up in its entirety. I think it's really a good read. Henry is a very humble, honest and low-key guy, but he is also very intense. He talks about his lesson with Jerry Byrd in part 2.

Henry was one of the first steel players I saw after moving to Portland and I've been a huge fan of his ever since. He's a natural musician with a knack for playing just the right thing, with great tone and always with so much feeling, like he says: the music in between the notes. He always makes me think, "I wish I'd said that." It's going to be exciting to see what he does with his new instrument.

Thanks, Mike, for this and the other interviews, as well as the rest of the great stuff on your site.

Hey Russ, we talked about you, too. Henry said, "Russ is a genius. He knows all of that math and he can play anything. We started a little band together and every time we got together to play he was better than the time before. It was amazing."

+1 Mr. Green You need to do one of your conversations with Russ.

Henry, Russ and Doc Stein are my favorite Portland steel players, probably in no small part because they're all swing players, and let me tell you, that's a pretty rare breed. I may play swing as well, but I'm definitely on the tier below these guys.

Henry is being far too kind in his assessment of me, but that just shows what a nice guy he is! Same goes for you, Twayn! Bump this to the top for a great interview of a great player.
