This is the earliest photo I've seen of Billy Mize.

Billy is third from left.

Bill Woods is third from right.

One of the others is Cousin Herb Henson and I believe one of the others is Dallas Frazier.

Help with IDs is welcome.

I remember Cousin Herb - he had a TV show on a UHF channel back in the late 50’s just about all the country stars appeared on this show -- they worn’t big stars back then -

I’m sure it was Al Brumley - Tom’s Brother was a bass player at one time - I think he got Tom on the show to introduce his Steel picken around 1960

Billy was really a great steel player but it was overshadowed too much by his vocals and songwriting ability. Who can forget the classic "It All Depends on Who'll Buy The Wine" which was one of Billy's many compositions and recorded by Charlie Walker, Jerry Lee Lewis, Micky Gilly and others. He hosted the Melody Ranch TV Show on Gene Autry's station for many years as well as holding down the bandleader position at Bonnie Price's Foothill Club in SoCal. All that plus his recordings which are outstanding. I like Billy's tune "Terrible, Tangled Web" which was also recorded by Dean Martin. Billy told me that Bob Wills had offered him a job as his steel player and when Billy turned it down, ol' Bob got highly offended and wouldn't speak to him. Billy just didn't have time to play with Bob with everything else going on. In addition to Dean Martin, Ray Price and others recorded his songs. And lastly, with all his talent and success I'll have to say that he was without a doubt the nicest and best band leader I've ever worked for!....JH in Va.

Jerry, you are correct that Billy chose a career as lead singer rather than a sideman position. He dearly loved to be in the spotlight. Matter of fact, back in the early 80's, when Billy's backup band, me included, won Non Touring Band of the Year, it was Billy who went to the awards show and collected ALL of the awards for the band; and then never even brought them in for us to see. It has been 20+ years, and to this day we don't even know what they look like.

Next time someone talks to Billy, remind him, "isn't it time that you give the awards to the players that they were awarded to?"

Maybe there was another reason that Bob Wills stopped speaking to Billy. Nothing wrong with his singing, but the way a person conducts business says a lot about his personal character, such as not abiding by union rules. And no, I never signed a confidentiality contract.

I got a magazine (currentyl playing hide and seek in storage here) with a picture of Billy Mize in the group 'Johnny McAtee & his Sons Of The San Joaquin', the group includes Bill Woods and Cousin Herb Henson.
It's dated 1949 and it's taken at the Clover Club.

Good to see a picture that includes Johnny Cuviello. I haven't seen him for a long long time. I worked with John in San Francisco area back in the early to mid 60s.
