Lee McIntire was still active at as a steel player right up until he died a couple months ago. He was 90 years old. Should be a few out there around that age that are still playing. Oldest banjo player? Wade Mainer, 104 years old.

I saw Buck Grantham play at the Tulsa show. He is a great player, great tuning and the best tone I'v heard in a long time. Not sure how old he is but someone said he's over 80.... |

Jerry, that may be true but he out plays most pedal steel players! Without pioneers like Bobby, there would be no pedal steel... |

I don't know how old Dale Granstrom is but he's old enough to be the great-grand-dad of most of the lead singers he's backing these days... |

Hi Bob:
I have been wondering for quite some time as who is the oldest pedal steel guitar player in the country who is still active playing the pedal steel guitar, even if he just plays a few gigs a year and plays steel guitar at home.
The oldest pedal steel guitarist must still be able to play the double neck pedal steel and still using both hands, and using both feet on the floor pedals and both knees on the right and left knee levers.
I would like to put my name down as probably one of the oldest at three months short of NINETY YEARS OLD. I am very active on the pedal steel guitar and still play music from the fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, and some years of music in the 1920's and 1930's and 1940's. I started playing steel guitar in 1950 and then got my first pedal steel guitar built by Paul Bigsby in 1955. I have owned several pedal steel guitars thru all the years and still play my twin ten Mullen and my twin ten Sierra.
I am curious is there are any of the guys at this age who are still playing.
Let me know what you can find out.
Regards,
Louis Armentaro

This makes me swell with Montana pride.
I'm a reflexive researcher. There's some great information on Mr. Armentaro available online:
http://www.gaylynnrobinson.com/louis-armentaro/
He's a Guiness World Record Holder!
And served his time in the trenches, in more way then one.

I'm not terribly far away, and have friends in Livingston. I hope to connect with him some time in the future.
Thank you b0b, and everyone in the community for making information like this readily available. |

I am not the oldest by far but I am 81 and still play PSG D12 8&6 and I would not consider playing without my 83 Evans FET 500 with custom built 15" JBL speaker built in mid 70's to handle the low notes of a Hammon Organ and the reason I prefer this particular JBL is because I use a low F on my C6 neck. I have been playing steel guitar since about 1947 and my first pedal steel was a four neck Wright Custom out of Red Bluff, CA in about 1959. I have been playing D12 PSG since about 1965. Got my first D12 MSA from Al Marcus and a D12 MSA directly from Maurice in 1974 and my current D12 Carter in 2005. I am through buying more because I think my Carter will out last me. My playing days, until I retired in Wyoming, has been in San Franciso Bay Area and the Nevada circuit and I have enjoyed all of it, both the good and the bad times. _________________ Carter D12, MSA S12, 12 String Custom Made Non-Pedal, Evans FET 500LV, Evans SE200, Peavey Nashville 400, Fender Steel King |

I'm too young to get into this but in a couple of months I'll be 84 and still playing. I have even more fun building pedal steels as a hobby. Please forgive me, I'm not tootin' my horn, but thought I would include a picture of one that I built and play. S-12 Universal w/pad.
