Hello everyone, As most of you know after our 11 year old daughter Carey Heavner passed away in september 2011 from colon cancer my wife and I started the CAREY HEAVNER FOUNDATION to help keep careys name alive as well as to give financial assistance to families that has a child with cancer.

My question to all of you. If I were to reserve the don gibson theatre in shelby and bring in some players such as Joe Wright and a few others would you come up to participate and help raise money for the Carey Heavner Foundation? Of course I will have to check to make sure This wouldn't conflict with any other event at what ever time we were to schedule it. I was thinking around Feb. or March of 2012. I spoke with the president of the MASGA several months ago and he stated that they couldn't financially support such an event but they will help with moral support.

The don gibson theatre is an awesome place to hold this event. You can check it out at don gibson theatre.com
I would like to hear from you if you think this will be something you would be interested in,whether it be to participate to play or simply spectate.
hope all of you will really consider this as this would be for a great cause.

Thanks,

I'm gonna do whatever I can to help Mike with this Jam / Benefit. If you great folks could please tell us what dates or events are already going on at that time in that neck of the woods (like Bill Ferguson did) it will help us pin down a date that is free and hopefully more will attend. I will be there to help as a staff musician and I look forward to getting to pick with each and every one of you. Thank you all and God Bless you for your support. Make sure and check out the Don Gibson Theater. It's a perfect place to hold this event.

Thanks David for your willingness to help,Bill thanks for informing us of the show in atlanta. I believe Saluda s.c. will be doing something special in February also since this will be there 25th anniversary, I would like to have a great turn out for this 1st annual carey heavner foundation Jam session,With that being said I believe we will eliminate trying to schedule this for february 2012. So we are looking at trying to schedule this between march, april, or may 2012. I have contacted the bookings manager at the Don Gibson Theater and am waiting on his reply for availability in 2012. Like David requested earlier if anyone knows of an event close by the shelby, NC area between March and May 2012 please inform us so we will not conflict with another planned event. For those of you who are not sure where Shelby, NC is, It is approx 50 miles west of Charlotte, NC and approx 70 miles south east of Asheville, NC. I want to personally thank each and everyone who is willing to help with this jam session and hopefully this will turn out to be something we can hold annually every year.
Thanks, Mike Heavner

Mike,

I was just about to mention the Saluda show, you beat me to it. I am the staff drummer for both the Atlanta and Saluda shows, and if the dates work out, I would love to help with your show in Shelby. My family is from NC, in fact one of my favorite uncles lives there in Shelby. I followed your story with great interest last year, and it would be an honor to play my small roll in this event.

By the way, we have a show in Saluda next week, come join us if you can.

Hey Folks, Keep in mind that this proposed jam session / benefit is for early next year, but that gives us time to make it one outstanding event. If you think you might be interested in playing, helping out or just coming to listen to some incredible steel players, please let us know about it. Mike is still looking for a date that doesn't infringe on any other shows and what will be the most convienent for the most people. Please, chime in and give us your thoughts. Thank you all so much!

Mike, I got an email from one of my buddies in NC. who is one smoking steel player. His name is Myron Smith and he said as things get nearer he'll see what he can do to help us out. Myron was one of the first great steel players I got to work with when I quit school ( yes, I know it was a bad thing to do ) at 15 and went on the road to Missouri the first time. Myron plays steel, and many other instruments, with the Norfolk Southern Lawmen from NC. He's an absolutely incredible steel player and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Check them out. www.norfolksouthernlawmen.com
On another note, my wife and I really love the new Carey Heavner shirts that you sent us. They will be worn with love and pride. Thank you so much! If you get a chance you should add a picture of the new green color shirt that you sent me. Thank you to everyone for your help with getting this event planned. God Bless you all.

I just want eveyone to know I'm still waiting on the availability of the don gibson theater. If I havn't heard from him sometime soon I do have a plan B. The Don gibson theater holds concert to major artist so I will assume that the guy is just busy.

If we are able to put this Jam session together and I feel certain that we will. I would like to ask all of you who could to make a donation to the carey heavner foundation that arn't able to attend so we can hold this event next year. The Carey heavner foundation gives financial support to families who has a child with cancer. we have helped alot of families and we want to be able to continue to do so. The Carey heavner foundation is a fully accredited 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization. I am not asking you to send any donations as of yet until we make sure this jam session is a go, We would just like to know if some of you would be willing to contribute to the foundation for this to be a prosperous steel guitar jam session. There is no minimum or maximum you can donate,If all you can spare is $ 1.00 for this event then that's $ 1.00 we can use to help families. When we hold any event of any kind we have to show that we are making a profit in order to keep the IRS happy. In other words if we were to reserve the don gibson theater for the psg jam session and we were to rent it for $ 500.00 we need to show a profit above this amount in order to be beneficial. If you could help with this event you would not believe the impact you will have on a childs life or there parents. Not to mention all the fun and talent that will be there to support the carey heavner foundation and just knowing you played a part in this PSG Jam session although you can't attend cause you live to far away.
Thanks for any support you can contribute to the CAREY HEAVNER FOUNDATION in making this a very prosperous 1ST annual carey heavner foundation steel guitar Jam session.

Thanks so much for your support steve and kenny. You guys will have a spot for sure. I'm still trying to iron out all details so that this will hopefully be a very prosperous event, I am very excited to say that I have contacted or been contacted by some well known steel players who have showed interest in coming up and helping the carey heavner foundation. I don't want to give to much details until everything is certain but one of the steel players that I have contacted has said they may even hold a seminar just as soon as I can give them a time/Date. I am very excited about this event and am looking forward to having alot of awesome steel players to come up and help for this great cause as well as have a blast. Alot of families will benefit from this steel guitar Jam session if there is enough financial support and participation. Hope to see more interest so we can confirm a time/date for 2012.

Hello everyone, I havn't had the chance to post on the forum lately about the Carey Heavner Foundation Jam Session scheduled for next year at the don gibson theater. We have been really busy trying to do the golf tournament and I just havn't had the time, and for that I do apologize.
The executive at the don gibson theater finally contacted me yesterday 5-31-11.
He and I have an appointment the last week of june to tour the facility and to find out just what will be needed for the House band and the steel players. with that being said and this being my first time putting together such an event/fundraiser for the carey Heavner Foundation.I would like to know from all steel players who may be interested in participating, what are your preferances as far as setting up and performing in front of an audiance? What would one be willing to pay to see such an event? since this is a fundraiser/Jam session do you ask the steel players coming to play to pay a fee?
As you can tell I have questions that need answers.
It has also been brought to my attention as to when to schedule this event next year. as I've stated before I do not want to conflict with any other event. I have already ruled out scheduling this event in february due to the Saluda SC show and the one in Atlanta GA. So this will leave us an option from March 2012 til ?????. It was brought to my attention about possibly scheduling it in early spring since most of us deal with bad winters and look forward to the spring to get out of the house. (Spring Fever) I guess is the word. Maybe even late summer since some will realise that when old man winter comes around again we will pretty much be house bound again. I'm open for all of your comments and suggestions pertaing to the 1ST annual CAREY HEAVNER FOUNDATION fundraiser/Jam Session. We as a foundation want to be able to continue to support those familys that has a child with cancer to help with anything from gas cards,Utility bills, grocerys, medical expenses, mortgages etc. things we all take for granted on a daily basis. My wife and I have already walked in those shoes and I can assure you that it's not a easy thing to do. We are sending gas cards this week to the levines children hospital in charlotte, The social worker to whom we are working with requested this from the carey heavner foundation a couple days ago. She said there were several familys who didn't know how they were going to be able to bring there child in to do some chemotherapy because they didn't have the gas to get there. I can assure you this will not be a problem after this week. I can relate to situations such as this one and it's not easy having to deal with your child having cancer and then having to worry about money to pay bills or put gas in the car to get them to the hospital to take there treatments.
Sorry for getting carried away about this, My family has a heavy burden for the kids with cancer along with there parents.
Once again sorry to have gotten carried away with this.
So, I'd like to hear from you who maybe attending to next years Jam Session and for those of you who can't attend but would help donate to a great cause.
