Just received and set up my "new" harmos in C6TH. Amazing guitar!I have added a high G. On my 8 or ten string lap steels I use a high G. Any reason to add a low string instead? Thanks for the comments.
Cheers - Ray

I find that, even though I really prefer the high 5 note, I've grown absolutely dependent on the low 7 (instead of the 6). I have a 7 string tuned Bb,C,E,G,A,C,E and retune to A,C#,E,F#,A,C#,E when I feel the need for the high 5. That A6 also gives you a full B11 tuning by tuning the lower E to Eb.

I agree with John. I have my 8 string C6 tuned the same way...I use a regular low E string for the 8th string & change it from E to F to G depending on the song. I also occasionally change my 6th string to C#. However, I'm probably the only one who notices. Very Happy

I would lose the high G and go for the low A, but I like to play a lot of chords (I also like to tune string 6 to C#).

The high G string accommodates those who want to play the thirds harmonies on the top strings without slanting.

Thank you all! That is why I ask the best people and players anywhere. Learning is as much fun as playing.
I will make the changes. I like your chord playing idea Mike.

Cheers - Ray

I think I'm gonna start using an extra bass string. Listen to this:

Kayton Roberts - St. Louis Blues

Around 2:45 is a few neat licks with the low string, and then some walking bass lines after.

Personally, I'd find a high G much more useful than any low string (I can't even remember the last time I picked the low A on my 8-string C6 Mr. Green )

But it depends a bit on your playing style/situation, I play mostly with a band, so the low frequency spectrum is covered by bass & strummed acoustic rhythm guitar; and I'm going for that "high lonesome" country sound, and play mostly melody lines, double & triple stops, rarely ever play "big" chords...

My 8 string C6 lap has a D on top, because it lets me play those C6 pedal style scalar things. And because if the D isn't there I keep hitting the string looking for it!
