Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone can give me their thoughts on the Wilcox steel guitar. I understand Chet is a private builder and his instruments look great but how do they hold up. What name brand guitar might they compare to sound and playability wise. Are they repairable with other guitar parts or strictly Wilcox. Would they be considered an entry level guitar? I hope my questions are not out of line.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Chuck , I purchased a new wilcox 2years ago and I played it for 3000 hours literally and they really sound good and play well, He put a wallace pup in it, I like it alot, the way he makes the guitar and case for the money I have no complaints, and if youve seen one of these you may understand what im talkin about, you learn to trust the guitar your playing, I play mine out all the time and get lots of compliments, Chet is also a great guy to deal with if you ever had a problem or question

I would only say that if you are getting your guitar from Chet you are in good hands. On the other hand if it is an older guitar from a private party you had best check it out thoroughly.
Chet is a fine gentleman who cares deeply about his work and his customers, a forum search will perhaps give you more background on him and his hand-built guitars. |

I have had a couple of Chets guitars. The last one that Chet built for me (I am posting a couple of pictures) is unreal.
It really has the features of any other pro guitar out there only at a fraction of the price.
I have owned 2 mullen guitars, 1 zum (stage one) an old MSA, and 2 emmons legrand 3's (still own one)
My current Wilcox guitar has 4 pedals (franklin on 4th) and 5 knee levers. Beautiful red lacquered finish. The tone and sustain on this guitar is VERY similar to my Emmons legrande III. I have a George L 10-1 pup in my Wilcox.
I actually took my Wilcox and Emmons to his shop today and we played around with them. Regarding Tone and playability, they are so close... almost too close to call.
I have had this one for about 60 days.. if I am as happy in 60 more days as I am today, I will sell the legrande III and buy another Wilcox and put some money in my pocket.
Disclaimer - if you dont know how to work on your guitar, buy from a shop that lives close to you so they can make changes for you. I prefer my pedals low to the ground with short throws... especially short throws on the knees... so I moved the rods around and did it.. if you dont know what I am talking about, buy from a shop close to you or hopefully you have someone close to you to help you.
That goes for any guitar - Emmons, Mullen, Wilcox.. etc...

I had the chance to play Craig's the other night. It is a very nice steel. Levers and pedals are very easy to press, very responsive. All the pulls come in so nice and true. The tone is outstanding. And it is light. I was so impressed I put in an order for one. Mine will be laquer with natural top like Don Hinkle's, but will be black. It will have 4 pedals and 4 knees. _________________ Zum Encore, Zum Stage One, Fender 2000, Harlan Bros., Multi-Kord, |
