Good luck, Mitch. I don't think there have been enough Deluxe 6 owners with this sort of problem to really answer your question properly. Most of the Fender Deluxe steel guitars were eight string guitars.

Mitch, I think you'll have to cut off one end of each strip (cut off one of the tabs with the screw hole) with a hack saw to allow the strips to fit into the cavity in the body. Notice the cuts on the original strips.

OK... got the Klusons today...and Doug, you were right ! The screw tip closest to the 3 & 4 string tuners will need to be cut off..

BUT... there's more ...

The tuner shafts on the Klusons are 'oh so very' TOO BIG DIAMETER !!.. so the tuner shafts would need to be reduced OR the tuner pan 'slots' for the tuners would have to be expanded ever so slightly.. don't have the tools for either job... so the Deluxe will stay as it is until I can figure out how / who to best do the work.

...oh well...

Just a thought.. what is "broken" on the old ones? Can you pull the case off (unbend the tabs) and use the new tuning key and gear with the original shaft and then put the covers back on, rebending the tabs?

That's what I was thinking. I have a friend who repaired the original Kluson tuners on his Emmons. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, but it's worth a try. Like Hal said, open up the tuner(s), install the new parts and close em up. If you're not comfortable doing that kind of work, maybe there is a guitar repair shop in your area that could do it?

I would recommend these guys (since you're in CA): http://www.gryphonstrings.com/repairs_restoration/index.php

I just did a similar repair for Forum member Bruce Terrell. He lives in the same state, but far enough away that he mailed the parts to me for the repair. This kind of repair can be done by mail, because of the removable tuner pan.

Thanks guys. I was really hoping they'd just slip right in ... HA !

I have a few local repair guy options, so it'll get done at some point.

The orig. tuners are OK for now, just a couple getting 'glitchy.. gritty' and hard to get the string in tune. Once it's in tune it doesn't slip so it's useable for now.. just would like to have them replaced if possible.

Mitch. I'm currently restoring my 55 T8. These tuners work with the pans: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guitar,_slotted_peghead_tuners/Grover_18:1_Sta-Tite_Slotted_Peghead_Guitar_Machines.html
The only thing is they're individual, and the knobs are incorrect. I don't care if the knobs are incorrect, but I'm going to make/drill/tap connection tabs so the shafts don't rub against the pans. Good luck with your repair!
