Hi folks,
I have decided to explore GBDGBD-format tuning in search of new songs and ideas, and am really enjoying it so far. I've tuned my Vega console to AC#EAC#E and it really sings in this tuning.
Although my main objective is to write and play my own material, I was thinking that learning some other tunes in this tuning would be really helpful in finding chord voicings and ideas - does anyone have some tunes/TABs to recommend? Or some chord charts or similar?
(I guess there must be loads of Dobro/bluegrass tunes in this tuning, but as these often tend to feature a lot of hammer-ons/pull-offs that may not always sound as good on an electric steel as on a Dobro, I am more curious about tunes that would suit electric lap steel.)
Thanks in advance!

This tuning in the years I took Hawaiian lessons was called a "High Bass" - "A" tuning on a six string lap steel. As soon as I got an eight string neck I added an F# before the middle E and it became an A6th tuning. This really opended the tuning up for minors and Major 7th's for a more Pop Style playing. |

Fred, I don't suppose there is any point discussing the limitations of the 135 tunings with someone of your experience. I'm sure you figured that at out a long time ago. Stacy Phillip's two books of Hawaiian Steel Guitar have some good examples in those tunings. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

I would suggest listening to Roy Acuff material. Though Os played a Dobro (some of Acuff's late early to middle stuff had some electric steel)it is A tuning with lots of two note chords (double stops?)(1&2[nice transitional forward slants as well];1&3[nice 2 fret forward slants especially when repeated back and forth];2&4 straight bar and reverse slant;3&5 bar and forward slants;5&6),3 note majors, flowing minors, trills, harmonics, and slants. Just follow along and you will fall in to the groove. Put on overalls and a funny hat and start with "End Of The World". |

One of our few favorites at recent and rare HSGA gigs is a Japanese fellow we know as Mr. Moto, maybe Don Woods knows his name, who uses the high A to fine effect with old style yet jazzy stylings, really gets mileage out of it with slants and good tone/taste. |
