Been working on learning a bunch of Waylon songs with a band and am having a great time with it but I'm stumped by Black Rose. Anyone have an idea of how he's getting all these great sounds? Here's a youtube clip for those of you who don't have it on your phones like you should oughta...

I think you are hearing a Lead Standard Guitar bending the strings. I do not hear a "Steel" on this recording. Could be wrong !! _________________ Sacramento Western Swing Society Hall of Fame, 1992 |

I agree. Sounds like a B/G bender Tele. Not steel guitar. |

The first guitar you hear is a Tele...the second is Mooney.
I saw and heard him play this song with Waylon about the time this record came out...he played it just like this...Mooney wasn't no ordinary man. |

To answer your question,Jon...Mooney had a kinda"dobroish"tuning on one neck of his steel...that would explain the open strings on this cut...in the key of G...
"ancient Chinese secret,huh?" |

Steve, thanks for that! I had to figure someone here in Forum-land knew the definitive answer! This forum is an amazing place. No ordinary man indeed... |

Mooney used to carry a wah-wah pedal so he could cover James Burton's part on one of those instrumentals they did together...was it"Moonshine"?
First steel player I ever saw or heard with a sitar bar...
I got to hang with him every day for three weeks on a tour we did with Waylon when I played guitar with George Jones...he was a one of a kind in every respect. |

There are many people on the Forum who were good friends with Mooney...those three weeks worth of shows are the only times I ever had any chance to talk to him...we really didn't talk shop(he was not a shop talk guy,as far as I could tell, and neither am I)...he told me about writing"Crazy Arms",and talked about Wynn Stewart, and Webb Pierce, and a lot of people he knew in the 50s and 60s...we had a few drinks...I really enjoyed getting to hang around with Ralph...I've been very fortunate in my career to be able to spend time with people who I consider the"Mount Rushmore"guys...Mooney certainly fits that description,at least for me. |
