Check out Edly's "Music Theory For Practical People":
http://www.edly.com/mtfpp.html

It's easy to understand and also entertaining, not many theory books you can say that about...

I'll second the recommendation for Edly's. I've had a copy for several years now, and refer to it often.

That link has it for $12.50 US, my gosh that's the best money you'll ever spend. (Uh, second to the $5 for joining this forum, of course!).

Thomas,
Mike Perlowin, a 'regular' here,
has an excellent book, just what
you're asking about, plus he explains
how it all relates to the E9 tuning.
Click -->here and scroll down to
his responses.

I would recommend workbooks that you actually have to do some writing in. When I was in high school, we worked from a series of workbooks (cannot remember the name, but they were old school standard) and they started off relatively simple and then moved into things like transposing. They were very useful and helped me greatly.

These books look like a great place to get your theory going: http://www.amazon.com/Alfreds-Essentials-Music-Theory-Complete/dp/0882848976
