Last night that would have been the ever formidable and wonderful conversationalist Jay Leach. With that girl and Scotty singing country, Jay's getting lots of time on cam on steel and last night mandolin. _________________ Life is mostly Attitude and Timing |

Way to go Jay! Its truley wonderful that Fox network is featuring the Steel guitar up front and up close, and several times. This may help introduce some new young players to the Pedal Steel. |

I found it "typical" that during the 2nd song last night, the lead guitar played thru the entire song and you couldn't hear the steel at all because of it. Even on prime time TV this happens. Jay deserved better, I'm thinkin' : ) _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

I noticed the same thing.I was glad to see a steel player out front , but like yall I see it was just for show, but at least it was there. One thing Im glad to see is the country singers win. That tells me what America likes. In our band I can play 6 string better than our lead player can. When he does me that way I reach for my tele. That stops that.lol _________________ Gibson Les Paul

Hey guys,
I was likewise psyched to see STEEL on the American Idol stage, as the one of THE most watched shows in America, this is truly a huge plus for steel guitar and steel players, make no doubt about it, even though the steel only came through the mix a couple times.
Even better is that both finalists, and especially Scotty, being a throw back to "real" country music, should help to bring out the steel sound in the near future.
Thanks for the head's up on Jay Leach, I knew the forum would come through with a positive ID.
Aloha,

I guess I'll have to start watching the show, if they're going to play real music. Larry _________________ U12 Williams keyless 400

Well if you haven't been following the show, Scotty McCreary won American Idol last night, which many view as a great boost to "real" country music.
If you love country music, esp. the way it "used to be", and you haven't heard this guy sing, give a listen, you might be surprised.
Scotty's got a great voice and at only 17 years old, many many years ahead of him....which by extension should mean more awareness of and gigs for steel guitarists.
Let's at least hope so!
Best wishes,

|
|
After viewing Rick Schmidts' LINK (above)......I can't help but ask if there really is any sense in the rest of our steel playing beginners and semi-pro's to even try any further.
That room with perhaps $100,000 worth of recording/affects equipment plus a highly skilled technician operating the complex board..... just so the musician can 'practice'..........???? So he can manufacture 'that SOUND'? I'm not being critical of the musician in the LINK.......but rather what appears to be
a waste of time in a futile effort to attain some kind of musical success on one's own.
It sorta makes Bobbe's latest news letter seem meaningless as he explains how great players of today merely got together and helped one another rise to their level of current success. |

S. M. Johnson,
That link is showing a recording studio overdub session, as Rick stated in his post, not someones home studio practice setup.
In the clip we see Jay dialing in a sound, or as you say "manufacturing that SOUND", which is very common in recording studios.
Your comment "...what appears to be a waste of time in a futile effort to attain some kind of musical success on one's own".... is hilarious though, as obviously you have misread the situation.
That would be a heck of a setup though for someones home practice rig, including a personal engineer that watches you practice.
Funny. |

I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. I just wanted to say that I know that Jay Leach wasn't just side-lining on American Idol. Some of the music was recorded, but he played each song that featured him on Pedal Steel live. I think that the mix must have been better in the Nokia Theater than for TV. Of course, it was better live but it sure was watched by a lot of people. That's great for steel guitars and country music. Actually, Jay will be playing for Scotty on the "Tonight Show" this Wed. night. |

Now that they have live pitch correction in the mix Bo could come out of retirement and go back on the road again. |
