hello to one and all!
i'm so very excited to join this forum - i've been lurking for quite a while, but now i'm in!
anyway, my first of many questions is about my lefty pedal steel...i bought it on ebay about 3 years ago, and though life got in the way for a while, the guitar is now up and running (mostly)...
it was sold as an MSA SD-10, but i've never seen an MSA logo that looks like this one, so i'm starting to wonder if it's actually a home-build onto which someone slapped the MSA decals, or some kind of MSA/homebuilt hybrid...
a serial number (S11981) is stamped on the undercarriage, and having looked at dozens of MSA photos on the web, i see many parts that seem to be identical to my guitar (the changer, the nut, pedals, etc.)...
but the pickup wiring is dodgy (to say the least), and you can see where the wood has been gouged out to make room for the bottom of the changer, and there's all kinds of daylight around the pickup, but it's working for now, and i have bigger issues to address...
info/advice/opinions all appreciated, and if you have bad news about the authenticity of this guitar, that's ok, too...i might be upset about it down the road, but for now it works, and i'm in heaven...
by the way, the seller was friendly, helpful, and seemed like a perfectly honest human being - i wish i could remember his name, because he might well be a member...oh, well...
thanks for reading/looking, and i look forward to getting to know the fine people in this forum...
peace,
joey
sweetheart of the rodeo, here i come!
p.s. can anyone direct me to a psg tech/store/vendor here in san francisco, or at least the bay area? i'm having trouble finding any local info...

Joey!
Welcome to the Forum! I can't help you at all with your guitar. Everyone up here in Ohio played Klines. Well, except me on a Shobud, until I bought a Kline. I know there was one guy who played an Emmons. But lots of guys here will be able to answer your questions.
Welcome!

Tom Bradshaw is a steel guitar mechanic and absolutely loves MSAs, more than any other guitar I believe. He's in the East Bay.
Did you see the S-10 lefty MSA for sale in Alameda on Craigslist last week? _________________ Dave Zirbel-

Welcome to the forum, Joey,
I'll be moving to S.F. in a little more than two weeks and bringing my mid-seventies MSA Classic with me. If you're still in need of some help around then, give me a holler. I'm hoping the country music scene is a little more robust than it is here in Boston.
Best,
Ian |

I don't think its an MSA because they have chess pieces on the fret board. _________________ Gibson Les Paul

Thats an MSA hybrid/homebrew of some sort..all the pull mechanism parts certainly look like standard MSA, as does the stout aluminum frame. The changer I can't be certain.. It looks close to the MSA design, but seems to have adjustable lower return springs, which is not something I have seen on an MSA
After that its anyones guess... Whoever did the work did have the common sense to use what is arguably the most rugged and dependable pull mechanism available.
Linkon Guitars has lots of MSA type parts designed for aftermarket mods and repairs, as well as new builds using the time honored MSA type undercarriage.
who knows???..Doesn't matter anyway.
It looks rugged. If it plays and stays in tune, and sounds good, it IS good... bob

Ian
Plenty of bands looking for steel guitar, but it's a challenge to make a living of it on $50 a night gigs.
