I'm going to be in Nashville for a week on the above dates and was wondering if anyone in the area is going to be up to anything gig-wise or otherwise. I'm going to be staying in the downtown area, doing some songwriting sessions, but of course steel is always on the brain. I'd like to take a run out to Bobbe's shop at some point while I'm there. Maybe someone would be into taking a swing out there with me. Any leads or suggestions would be great, thanks. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Do they still write Country songs in Nashville?.. Do they still write any words that rhyme.. I heard its become a music trashmill..Good old Country songs are hard to find... Theres a start.. |

I'm going to write with a fellow Canadian writer and possibly others. Just playing it by ear. We have a song in syndication around the world on a US show called Joan of Arcadia which is cool. My co-writes see a good bit of play on Canadian radio. And yes, I prefer to rhyme when I write....ha. I'm not primarily a Country writer, though. You can hear samples on my myspace page (aside from the Gerry Raffery cover...ha.)
I posted a few weeks ago in Music about my upcoming trip to Nashville and got a similar negative response with regard to songwriting down there. Is this the general consensus? I know there's a lot of cookie-cutter writing going on, but any writing I do will not fall into that category.
Apologies for possibly posting this in the wrong section. I was hoping to hook up with fellow steel players and I figured this might be the best place. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Chris,
I was there earlier this month and had a great time, you can read my post on here somewhere.
Go to Broadway and into Ernest Tubb's record shop. There's a guy there about 30 or 40 some years old, maybe the manager or owner, who knows what's going on in town. The night we were there he let us know that Willie Cantu was going to be playing with a band across the street at Robert's Western World. Also, the Monday you'll be there looks like Memorial Day... if the Station Inn isn't closed for holiday, make sure to go there for the Time Jumpers that night. Arrive by 7:30 and get a good seat.
Have fun,

Chris, check out "The Players" schedule. They might be at 3rd & Linley. The Time Jumpers are a must see if the Station Inn is open. I can't imagine they would close on a good money night! By all means hop around Lower Broadway. You'll likely see Mike Sweeney, Carco, or any number of other great steel players.
Nashville has a great music scene. Jazz, symphony, opera, rock, folk and country; live music everywhere. Go see the Country Music Hall Of Fame behind the Hilton. I've spent several hours in there on more than one occasion. Heck, I think Loyd Green did a couple of events there in the past two years.
The Ryman might have some good shows that week. Visit their site and check out their events that week. Finally, I've been to The Bluebird Cafe many times and have enjoyed myself everytime. Be prepared if you go because their motto is SHHH! And they mean it. I saw Russell Smith & The Amazing Rythm Aces there one night and they were great.
Great town! Enjoy yourself |

There are some great players playing during the weekend. Mike Sweeney at Roberts Western World Sat from 2 - 6 PM and at the Wheel from 6 - 10PM. Doug Jernigan at The Stage on Monday 2 - 6 PM, Rusty Danmyer at TN Crossroads 6 -10 on Monday and Sweeney at Roberts 10 - 2AM. Paul Franklin and the Time Jumpers at Station Inn also. This is just a small list of the pickers on Broadway. |

THis is a great help, Mike...thanks a million.
The condo we were supposed to have for the week is now unavailable, so I'm looking for a decent but affordable motel/hotel in the downtown area. If someone could recommend a place, that would be gratefully appreciated. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Chris,
The ideal spot is the Hilton downtown. It's right in the middle of everything, but it usually runs about $250.00/night. There's also Union Station up Broadway still within walking distance to a lot of places mentioned in this thread; $200.00/night. Across the street from US is Holiday Inn Express for $100.00-$130.00/night. Ask up front about extra fees like parking. Some will tag $15-$20/day. You also have fees & taxes for all hotels. I personally prefer the Hampton Inn & Suites at Green Hills Mall. It's about $150/night with no hidden fees. It's a great area right near the Bluebird Cafe and lots of restaraunts. If in the area of GHM, check out F Scotts for dinner. Excellent food and tight Jazz.
You'll see cheaper hotels, but I would avoid them; the bargains can be pretty disappointing. I'm in Nashville often and accept that for $150.00/night, I can really enjoy my trip. |

Chris , Try the Sheraton Downtown. They have reasonable rates and it's within walking distance to all the places on Broadway. _________________ Show Pro #26 & #83,BJS bars,Stereo Steel,Tommy Huff cabs loaded with JBL D130's, Wampler pedals,NV112,NV400, Steelers Choice Seats |

I want to thank Cookie for the plug but I need to let you know that this Saturday will be the last night for The Honky Tonk Heroes Band to be doing a 6-10 shift on Saturday at the Wheel. We are moving to Tuesday nights 6-10. We've been pulling a double shift on Saturdays for a while now and we were given the option to go to Tuesdays. We'll still be at Robert's from 2-6 on Saturday and 10-2 on Monday nights.
Hope to get to meet you Chris. _________________ Zumsteel steel guitars, Telonics and Peavey amplifiers, GHS strings. |

Chris,
I always stay at the Motel 6 which is at the 97 mile marker north on 65. It's right at the Goodlettesville exit and only a short way's over to Seymour's place. Real nice area about 12 miles from downtown and priced for 'poor' people. Many good restaurants right in the area. Double with two double bed's is only about $42.00 a night, a little cheaper if you are a senior. It will save you a hundred or so a day with parking being around $10.00 right there on E. Broadway a half a block from Tootsie's. Have a good time.

The Comfort Inn 1501 Demonbreun is within easy walking distance (1 mile) of Broadway and even closer to the station inn, you can usually get a room there for about $70 a night if you ask for a discount.
As far as music, my favorite is Ike Johnson who plays every other Tuesday from 6 to 10 at Roberts, he is the best I have heard in Nashville and the place is not so crowded that night that you can't enjoy it. |

More great suggestions, guys...thanks so much. I will need to stay fairly close to downtown because I won't always have access to a car.
Looking forward to the trip! _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

What ever you do don't stay at the Fiddler's Inn. The help stole my camera while I was out of the room. Panhandlers also. |

I guess I've been out of the loop too long but 150/night motel seems wild to me. Branson area, 50/night or lower for a really nice room.
For about 20/day a car rental and staying in the next county, if necessary , seems good to me . Just MHO. |

instead of $250 a night, you could take two nights worth ($500) and buy a used voyager van...live in it while you're there and then drive it back to canada.
hope this helps! |

Hi Chris. After seeing your post I thought you were looking for a motel/hotel to stay in. There is a "Super 8" and a "Motel 6" side by side there on Dickerson Pike North of the downtown area and a Wafflehouse next to it that makes a killer omlette.
Bobbe's shop is off of Newshakle Island Rd. caddie-corner from the Oak Ridge Boys office. 123 Mid-Town Ct. |

The Comfort Inn on Demonbreu gets my vote, too. Book on the net via sites like http://fi.hotels.com/.
I got a better rate on the net than I would have at the desk. _________________ Olli Haavisto
