Hi all,
I'm playing in an acoustic trio, and we're going to be playing in a place where we will need to be ampified. We might have mics, but the last time we played there one of the guitar players and I had to share a mic (hard to do when you're both sitting). So, I'd like to put a pickup my Oahu squareneck guitar as a backup. It's one of the cheapies with the one piece aluminum bridge and saddle, so any sort of undersaddle pickup is out of the question. I don't know if a soundhole pickup would be high enough to sense the strings. I could always try to wire in an electric pickup, but that would defeat the purpose of the acoustic guitar.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
John |

John, I've used the Dean Markley Pro Mag single coils in an Oahu acoustic lap steel before. Worked okay for me. |

Fishman "Rare Earth" humbucker sounds awfully nice in mine. May need a pre-amp, depending on what amp or board you're plugging into & desired clean-vs-dirty tone. |

I have the same Ohau guitar and I use an EMG-ACS soundhole pickup. It is voiced for bronze or my fav nickel strings. The pole pieces are WAY adjustable so you can cozy up to the string of choice. Pay the price get the best. |

If you want to amplify the sound off the strings, I would recommend the Sunrise magnetic, sound hole pickup.
For the sound of the instrument, I would go with the under saddle Baggs I Beam pickup.
I have installed both of these on acoustic and weissenborn guitars.
In fact, I usally install both and run a stereo cord into a Marshall acoustic amp where I am able to balance the two pickups. |

Thanks for your responses - I decided to go with a Sunrise. Luckily I know a Sunrise dealer, because Sunrise has already made all 1,000 pickups they're making in 2011. |
