i'm digging my new stringmaster dual 8 the most, but can't help but wonder: what is the function of the knurled chingadera between the 4th and 5th strings under the flip-up cover?
any help will be much appreciated.

That's a blend pot for the two pickups to go from humbuking with both coils to the single coil by the bridge. |

Hi Kirk, like Dave said, it's a blender control. The rear pickup is always on and the blender mixes in more or less of the front pickup. |

You're blending the pickups, but it's not humbucking. It's like blending the pickups on a Telecaster. |

If I'm not mistaken, it is a form of humbucking.
The two pickups are wound in opposite directions. |

They are humbucking and wired in series, it is unusual for a vintage guitar to have a set of pickups that are humcancelling combined but certainly not unheard of |
