For $85 (shipped, "upgraded" electronics, tone bar)
I really can't complain too much.
First question; can the cover (not sure of proper term) lead to bad technique? Not sure if yo can tell from picture but cover also contains control plate; I do realize that removing it will require rework/remodel.
Second: wrap around tail/bridge is wicked angled; is this an expected result (BTW strings = .013s) |

Probably not lead to bad technique, but you won't be able to pick as close to the pickup as you might want to.
I own one of the earliest ones with the removable bridge cover. That was the first thing I removed when I changed strings.
I also replaced the existing Tune-O-Matic style bridge with a Gotoh style stop tailpiece. I find those bridges too complex for lap steels. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Cover is now off, pickup wired directly to jack.
They may have changed bridges as well between our two examples; mine is a one piece wrap around/tuneamatic deal. Are you using the Gotoh stop by itself? |

Here's a photo of how I have it set up currently.
Compare that to the tailpiece on the new SX lap steel.

I have at least two tailpieces in the parts drawer to try.
Like you said originally, not the worlds best lap steel, but what a cool platform for mods. |
