So we were in a "western store" shopping the other day and we heard about 6-7 "modern" country tunes...

I was really happy to hear that all of them were pretty much drenched in steel... and it was big in the mix, not completely buried behind 4 other guitars....

Maybe there is hope!

Smile

(don't know the tunes or the artists.. in general I am very ignorant about the modern country thing)

It all depends if they are good songs.

Well yeah... I didn't hear if they were good songs... in general I'm not a big fan of most the modern country "hits" very formulaic and everything is trying to be an anthem.. but thats just opinion.

My point was that the steel guitar wasn't buried in the mix, it was very prevalent and that made me happy.

Hey Josh,
There are plenty of good songs being recorded full of steel in modern country music everyday! Smile

I've listened to a snippet of the latest Gretchen Wilson album. And there was some steel on it. It was not my kind. This is why I commented.

yea... it seems like there is steel in almost every "country" song but for many years but it was buried under a ton of guitars and just peeked its head out every now and again..

These tunes had the steel BIG in the mix.. just like the older stuff!

The challenge now is will they take a player for the live gigs or tours? Oh Well

yea that is true...

I recently had a couple of pick up gigs with a "modern country" act and I had to learn a bunch of tunes really quickly... Miranda Lambert was one of the artists they covered and I actually really liked a lot of her stuff... didn't seem like it had come directly and completely out of the Nashville song machine... she had some great steel on her album..

But when I went to her videos there was no steel player to be seen.... Sad

I was requested to back up a guy here who did a 'low budget'recording over there in Nashville of his second album on his official release gig at a major country music festival in this country. Steel players are very thin on the ground here. He went with guitar, bass and drums in the end even though a lot the songs were dripping in steel. Confused I'm with you Theresa IMO - his loss! particularly on his 'album release gig' but, the sadest part was the punters probably did not realise or care!!. Maybe says a lot about the audience as well!

I believe Miranda and Carrie just hired a steel player.
What Texas artist are you referring to?

It's only a guess, but I guess Ray is talking about Texas artists like Justin Trevino, Amber Digby, Bobby Flores, Johnny Bush, Jake Hooker, Dale Watson, Darrell McCall, Tony Booth, and Curtis Potter. They're a big part of my play lists these days.

Theresa I don't buy your theory, why hire a steel guitar and hide it behind the other instrument. Like Brad Prasley, he hires a steel guitar and hogs the playing trying to show out with his loud lead guitar.Just my opinion, Shorty

Better watch mentioning new stuff not being country Ron I got reported for airing my opinion about this last year.
But I will say thank goodness for the Texas crowd where one can STILL hear the real stuff:),also on RFD TV I played for David Church for not quite a year
My favoirte song Murder on Music Row hit da nail on da head. Here is the link to Me David and my brother playing some Hank http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM-LbCNRu3g

Ron,
Country radio doesn't play who you've mentioned. Brad's latest hit "This Is Country Music" has Randle playing upfront and showcases him. I'm not a fan of Brad's guitar playing either, but Randle is being heard!

Sugarland & Zack Brown are a real disapointment in so many ways. Thank goodness for George, Alan, Chris Young, Easton Corbin, Dierks, Reba, Blake Shelton, Miranda and others that are using steel on records and on the road.

Steel Guitars are only around now for mostly show they have become less and less prominent on the so called country pop singers recordings they are to be seen and not heard. Think about it Shorty you are correct about B Paisley He wants to be the total star..My Dad used to see a stage hog and say. I can play piano, steel, guitar, organ, harmonica,I can dance... The Steel guitar will be around a few more years but even the ones that are allowed to play most are fuzzed toned and metal sounding to where they don't sound like a steel should. Compare something like King of broken hearts G Strait or Keith Whitley I never go around mirrors not much sounds like that anymore because it just wouldn't fit in the .....MUSIC??. thank goodness for RFD TV:) real stuff!.I don't listen to Trashville anymore.

Don't forget Billy Currington. Billy's got Abe Stoklasa playin' steel with him and Drew Belk is playin' steel for Easton. Miranda's steel player is Chris Kline, Kevin Post is on steel with Blake-before he joined Blake, he played steel for Terri Clark. Travis Toy's on steel for Rascal Flatts. Jason Aldean's steel player is Jay Jackson, who had previously been on steel with Jack Ingram and other artists and Justin Schipper's on steel with Josh Turner.

Theresa, Chad Jeffers plays steel for Carrie-he was new to pedal steel when he got the gig. Chris Kline who plays for Miranda was actually a keyboard player, but he then decided to play steel after Miranda decided her songs needed steel.

Those are some interesting facts Brett! Who would think that one day you are steel on the side and the next playing steel in one of the biggest country acts on the charts! I would have to say though it's chemistry more than anything. It must work or it doesn't for them. Chemistry and dedication.

How good can the song be or ones taste in music be if the only thing one listens for is to hear an instrument? True The musicians do make the song and the singer sound good, singers rarely make the musicians sound good..Team effort goes a long way..A good song finds a good musician..a good song does not always make a singer good.Paisley forgot one rule..It's not what or how much you play that counts..Certainly how loud you play comes in there somewhere too..Be nice to hear Steel intros once again I admit..Actually it would be nice to hear some real good new Country music again...OKFMA.. LaughingI come from an old school that preaches there is only two kinds of music good or bad...Or as in a lot of cases what I like and what I don't.... Crying or Very sad

World Class acts, novice steel players. What's wrong with this picture? Confused
