Hi,

I'm new to steel and am very keen to be pointed towards great examples of playing especially where the music is really using the steel to push some boundaries. For example I like what BJ Cole and Daniel Lanois do with the instrument alongside the greats like Buddy Emmons (especially when he's playing jazz).

I've been using Youtube to sample some great playing but I'm sure there's a lot I won't find by myself. So I'm very interested to see what fellow forumites would point to as a great example of steeling on Youtube.

My own music background is very non-country so uses of steel in unusual contexts really interest me, as well as virtuousity.

Looking forward to what you guys recommend!

Ian

Hi Mike,

'Born in Chicago' is one of my favourite blues rock tunes - love the Butterfield version! Great low slide at the end of your solo too. I''m an indie-rock guitarist so I love the texture of fuzz - which FX pedal were you using?

Keep em coming folks!

To keep the ball rolling I just came across an interesting clip of BJ Cole and a cello player performing a 20th century classical piece - nice use of volume swells.

I have quite a few YouTube searches of my favorite players bookmarked (Buddy Emmons, Weldon Myrick, Doug Jernigan, Jaydee Maness, Hal Rugg, Paul Franklin, Curly Chalker, Tom Brumley, Tommy White, Jim Loessberg, Lloyd Green, etc., etc. to only name a few) and several artists who frequently had great steel playing on their records (Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Mel Street, Johnny Bush, Moe Bandy, Charlie McCoy, Wilburn Brothers, etc. etc. again to only name a few). I sort them chronologically so I can see new postings first.

Another thing you can do when you find a steel player or artist whose work you admire is look them up on the All Music Guide:

http://www.allmusic.com/

and search Google, YouTube, Rhapsody, Pandora, Amazom, eBay, etc. for anything that looks interesting.

It was a combination of an old Electro-Harmonix Big Muff and an MXR 6 band EQ unit.

Charlie, if you're talkin' bout the "same ol' me " vid, it's hard tell since the light gives a contrast that makes it hard to identify the brand
BMI, i would'nt think so
Derby perhaps ?

You may want to dig out all of the Dave Easley International Steel stuff. No one is playing jazz at that level except Dave. Here a Japanese duo playing entirely different music than the usual:

You'll probably want to dig up 1 through 6 of their stuff. This is another one of those "where did THAT come from" sets.

I came across that video in one of my own searches! The other poor girl only gets about 2 secs of screen time - but she is playing one of my favourite looking 6-stringers: a Supro Dual Tone (same type of guitar Link Wray recorded Rumble with).

Here's a cute clip:

Main reason I'm posting is to point out the 'wall of Peaveys' - is this the PSG equivalent of a huge stack of Marshalls?!
