I wasn't at the Aiello Steel Guitar Bash, but I certainly recognize the singer of the Hawaiian War Chant. His name is Bill Schmiedlin. Cool

Bill is a great steel guitar player who played professionally in the Pittsburg area after World War II. He can make a steel guitar sing. I think that I spotted his steel guitar on the floor in the video.

Bill was a regular performer at the AISGC and HSGA, the Winchester and Joliet Hawaiian Steel Guitar Conventions before he developed health problems. He had many songs in his repetoire which he played and sang, but he especially liked songs that Sol Ho'opi'i did. Of course, the Hawaiian War Chant was a favorite of many. We all love him and miss him.

Aloha, Smile
Don

Bill also loved to sing and play "Makalapua"...I remember him doing a beautiful version of that song. He could play fast tunes and slow pretty ones equally well.

I saw and talked to Bill only once, at Joliet some years back. He played one of my guitars while we talked about instruments etc.
He was using a Rick frypan on stage. An excellent player for sure. Would be great if he could make another convention at some point.

It was cold and it was raining, but Dave Giegerich was there and Harry Dietrich was there, and Rick Aiello and his family and my wife and kids and Gerald Ross and many other friends were there and we all had a great time and that's all she wrote.

Look at babie Ellie clapping .. and baby Emmie walking into view ... and baby Dusty sitting on my lap.

And that's baby Tucker crying upstairs (and me walking up to get him).

Poor baby Max and baby Luigi ... they weren't born soon enough to meet all y'all.

Chrissy has been bugging me to have another "House Concert" ...

I wonder who's available ? Laughing Whoa! Mr. Green

Mahalo Howard for posting these videos. The Bill Schmedlin clip really brings back a lot of fond memories for my wife and me. When we first started going to the conventions twenty years ago Bill would always greet us with "Hi kids". We really weren't, but it felt so good that he considered us as such.

I think Bill must hold the record for the most tunings used a twenty minute set. He knew them all, and used them all. He kept me busy for many years trying to figure them out.
