I just installed the Ken Fox replacement chips; now I don't have to replace the speaker; the shrillness in the highs is gone. Highly recommended. |

I recently installed the "Fox" chips in my 130 Special. It seems to be a little sweeter & fuller in tone. I'm not sure if that is my just my imagination. In reality I can't tell a whole lot of difference in tone as compared to my other 130 Special. The other one has a speaker labled "Scopion Plus" while the the one in which I installed the chips appears to have a little older speaker that is labled "Scorpion" only. To me what REALLY makes a great sound is the two 130s together. Love what I hear with both amps doing their thing in my practice area. I haven't tried both together playing out.

I agree, Don-the difference is subtle, but it's there. "Sweetness" is a good way to describe it. I've always been very sensitive to high frequencies, but the Fox treatment lets me add some highs without adding shrillness or harshness to the tone. |

are there any you tube videos available with before and after sounds of the new, old and fox mods? I have a original burr brown mod in a 112 is the new chip worth the change? Can the burr brown go in any of the smaller peavey practice amps? Would love to try it if possible with a tube preamp in one of those 8" speaker models. _________________ Mark Twang |

I gigged with a Special 130 for about 10 years--probably 500+ gigs. The original Scorpion speaker hurt the crap out of my ears when I cranked the amp. I replaced the speaker with EV Force and it was night and day and all of a sudden the harshness was gone. If there was something inherent in the preamp that made it sound harsh, I didn't notice it later on.
The worst for me was the Music Man amp with the EVM 12L speaker. Madonna mia! The harshest sound I ever had--would make my ears physically hurt. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |
