I have a line on two Webb 614 E Amps but neither one has the original JBL E130 Speaker. Were there any problems incurred with the JBL speakers in these amps ?

John, like any other component, they're subject to failure. I still have both the original JBL 15" E130-8ohm in my Webb, which I bought new in 1978 and JBL 12" in my GP 614. I have never had a problem with either of them and have pushed the E-614 often through the years.

I think many swapped them out to get a speaker capable of handling higher watts (louder). Much as you see today, the quest seems to be in finding the "ultimate" tone hence the frequent speaker & pickup change outs.

I had Ken Fox do his "intense mod" on the Webb a couple years back, which uses newer (upgraded) electronic components than what was available when they were first manufactured.

Kevin,

What impact did the Ken Fox mod make on your Webb Amp? Do you notice any difference in sound?

I am considering Ken's mod for my amp.

With Regards,

Steve, most WEBB amps have been around long enough where doing an upgrade to the circuit components is much needed. There are many better quality parts (caps, filters, etc) available today & those interested in tweaking out the existing amps eg Ken Fox, Brad Sarno, have found what works. To have the amp upgraded and all the inputs, amps controls lubricated, 1/4" inputs tightened etc. was well worth it.
From an audio perspective, it really made the amp "alive" again as it used to sound when it was new. I still have the original 8-ohm E130 in it and sounds great. I just sent him the amp. If you do a search in electronics, there are many comments posted about his mods, including Peavey, Fender tube stuff which I have a Twin I'd like to have Ken go through at some point. I have a Session 500 head I will order the kit for & do myself however.
Here's his link & info.
