Yes, I have also heard that Roy has closed up his shop. 3 years ago, (when Roy was 85 years young), he sold me his personal SD-10 that he had played in his home since building it in 1995. It has beautiful tone and plays very smooth.

I don't think there is enough room to say all the nice things about him that should be said. Roy was and is the perfect country gentleman, and I wish him all the best in his well deserved retirement.

They laughed when I sat down to play, cause' somebody pulled my chair away...

Roy is a great guy, and built one of the best guitars. I bought one from Roy in 04. I like my Mullen, but wish i would have kept my SD10 Pedalmaster. Roy, hope you have a great retirement. Larry Baker

WHOA,guys!!! Roy is not retiring...he's just re-treading and keepin' on rollin'!!!
Roy is not planning on building any more NEW guitars. However, Roy is not the kind of man who is content to sit around eating popcorn and watching Oprah on TV. He has decided to do only custom guitar work, repair work, re-building, and setup work. Right now he has a ton of this work in his shop and has no plans of giving that up for anything.
So, Roy isn't fading off the radar screen...he's just taking some pressure off himself. He told me once that he is a workaholic and spends at least part of every day of the week working in his shop as he has done for some six decades or more.
I hope this clears up any misconceptions.

I was just at his shop about two weeks ago and he was talking about all this. One reason he mentioned was that his long time supplier for legs has quit making them due to the cost of quality chrome plating.

But ya, he is not going away, just scaling back.

I stumbled on to Roy's shop several years ago while on a 'Best Little Whorehouse...' tour - he happened to be situated right behind our hotel!

I spent a lovely afternoon noodling on a steel in the shop and just chatting away with him. A thoroughly nice man who made me feel so welcome that day.

All I know is Roy builds the best steel guitars, my steel guitar shows no cabijnet flex, it stays in pitch and goes right back to pitch when the pedals are released, no signs of cabinet drop. Steve Black.
